You LSU fans who were around before Saban, how many of you actually cared about football to the point where you had high expectations for the Tigers? I mean no one thought they were ever more than a 2nd tier team but how many of you really cared about the program?

Winning bring us in a lot of fans that never cared before. bama should know that better than anyone.

All of the fans cared. The problem is that the ADs and Presidents didn't care as much about winning as the fans.

I watched more LSU in the 80's than I did the 90's. In the 80's I thought they were mostly decent. 90's dunno what happened.

Bama's always been good. Since the beginning of time when football was invented. We expect bandwagon fans and don't mind them really. When they jump off we don't get upset over it. It's just part of being great.

Yeah, I remember the 80s too, I was just referring to coaches right before Saban.
Arnsparger was actually pretty good, then after Archer's first year it started going to shite.

I came into my fandom around 1992. I only knew LSU to be a bad team as a young kid. I would hear stories about how we "used to be good" and about Billy Cannon and 1958. As an 8 year old, 1958 seemed like 100 years ago.
Despite the program being pretty bad back then, we still had a lot of passionate fans. People often described us as a sleeping giant. As I got older, LSU got good for 3 seasons. 1995, 1996 and 1997 was A LOT of fun for me. But, sadly we fell back down.
I was 16 years old when we hired Nick Saban in 2000. Winning the SEC in 2001 was like a dream. Winning the National Championship in 2003 was surreal. It's been a pretty fun ride since then.
As someone who once only knew LSU at their worst, it's easy to appreciate the last 20 years.

I noticed all these guys outside of La. in the early 2000's wearing LSU gear who would never have worn it before then. And now, reading Tiger Rant, I realize a lot of the yokels there posting are so big into football now. That was not how it was at all before 2000.

It happens about once every 50 years. Like I said, it's part of the deal. Makes those arse-whippings to the ones who think they're all that later mean so much more.

Maybe the fans over 100 years old, albeit some down times here and there, but that is how far back our winning tradition goes. Even with Shula, we had a 10 win season. But my point is that everybody in Alabama today does not remember a time when Bama did not have winning tradition.

Enough to pay to sit in the Superdome watch LSU beat Alabama on TV in 1982. Enough to enjoy their 1986 SEC Title that included defeating #6 Alabama in the last LSU-'bama game to be played in Legion Field. Actually the 1990's are the only decade that LSU didn't win at least one SEC Title.
