that's right - our bowl record is HIGHLY inflated this year.

I know, here come the downvotes...

But hear me out, in MOST years, the SEC has bowl game matchups where we have "weaker" teams from the SEC playing "stronger" teams from other conferences

SEC # 4 vs ACC # 2; or SEC # 5 vs Big 12 # 3

We almost always see SEC teams with more losses taking on opponents with better records.

This year?

8-3 LSU vs 7-5 Texas Tech

8-4 MS State vs 7-5 NC State

8-4 aTm vs 7-5 Louisville

9-3 UGA vs 7-5 Penn State

7-5 Ark vs 6-6 K State

The reality is, THIS YEAR, AUBURN and TENNESSEE are the ONLY SEC teams that took on someone with a much better record.

But that is pretty misleading when the opponents are Northwestern and Memphis, two traditionally weak programs...

our 10-2 record is great, but we did get to do it against a pretty weak slate

I like it better when our teams are playing against teams with stronger records.

But maybe that's just me...

So, what you're saying is that our lower finishing teams in the SEC have better records than higher finishing teams in other conferences AND that we're blowing them out in bowls, thus proving SEC superiority?

I could see your point but there are 2 reasons you are wrong.

1. Most of he games the SEC team dominated.

2. The SEC was considered down a little bit overall. Obviously the East wasn't great, the West wasn't as good as it has been.

Yet we ran through the bowl schedule at 8-2, with a chance of being 9-2. That's pretty impressive no matter who you are playing.

LSU was in a 4 way tie for 4th in the SEC, TT was in a 3 way tie for 5th. That's a pretty even match,

quote:

8-3 MS State vs 7-5 NC State

MSU was tied for 8th in the SEC. NCS was tied for 9th. One could make the case that both were 9th best in their conference.

quote:

8-4 aTm vs 7-5 Louisville

aTm was tied for 8th. Louisville was tied for 5th. Louisville ranked higher.

quote:

9-3 UGA vs 7-5 Penn State

UGA was in a 4 way tie for 4th. PS was 8th. Given that UGA lost to the only team they were tied for 4th with, you could make the argument to place UGA anywhere from 5th to 7th. UGA ranked higher.

quote:

7-5 Ark vs 6-6 K State

Ark was in the 4 way tie for 4th. With wins over two of the other three teams in that group, Ark probably would be ranked solidly at 4th. KState was ranked 8th. Solid advantage Arkansas.

Tennessee and Northwestern were ranked evenly in their respective conferences, with Northwestern ranked much higher in the committee's poll. Tennessee isn't even ranked in the AP while Northwestern was 12. Northwestern has a far more impressive win than Tennessee...hell, more impressive than any win Tennessee has had in years.

Memphis was ranked higher in their conference and got as high as 13th in the committee's rankings.

I think the SEC's record relative to their rankings vs. their opponents' is pretty darn strong. And that's before we factor in Alabama's humiliation of MSU.

Good point, we finally had a favorable Bowl Schedule and the blowouts showed how strong we should have been in regular season.

Hopefully we get back to being more competitive in-conference next year and a few more teams maintain lofty rankings throughout the season.

That said, wasn't our OOC record solid this year?

heh - I'm not mad, but these bowl matchups sucked this year

I have been unhappy with our bowl tie-ins since before the season started

To me, this year's bowl slate (not just the SEC games) has been pathetic since before the season started

The conference bowl tie-ins need to be shite canned

The ONLY bowl tie-in that makes sense for our conference is the Sugar, for historical and traditional reasons

Outside of that, the auto tie-ins are just stupid.

I mean, how the hell do we have ZERO pac 12 games?

it's ridiculous. Pick the 4 best teams for the playoffs - and then pair off teams that make sense based on actual records

I would have loved to see at least 1 SEC vs Pac 12 game

let the bowls go after the best teams they can attract, the whole bowl season was pretty disappointing this year

it actually was pretty good this year (no thanks to UGA, who had a bad schedule for the 1st time in a while)

NCAA football is an industry that makes billions, no reason for there to be such a weak ending to such a good product

Here's a guess at why we have zero pac-12 games.

They're on the West coast, we're on the East coast.

Bowls like it when fans fill the seats.

brilliant

there are how many bowl games in Texas?

I think that more tickets would be sold to a game like LSU vs USC - 2 traditionally good teams in the best conferences

I agree but it just happened to work out that way this season. Normally you are correct, usually it's a SEC team with a worse record vs a team with a better record/higher ranking in bowl games.

Who did the SEC intentionally dodge in its bowl game tie-ins? Where were the teams from the other conferences with better records sent instead of games versus the SEC? The unusual thing this year was the B1G and Big XII got more teams in the New Years 6. That moved all SEC schools down one game relative to the B1G and Big XII.

If those conferences were as strong as everyone claimed, then that should have been zero problem for them. Unfortunately, both the B1G and Big XII shite the bed when given the opportunity to excel. The SEC typically performed well when it was put in the same situation, and that was always one of the justifications that the SEC was the strongest conference in prior years.
