The timing is such an emotion-based complaint.
Announcing when he did was the most logical decision for the benefit of everyone involved, most importantly the players. Waiting much longer would have accomplished nothing.

As a fan, I can tell you that waiting a week would have made a HUGE difference.

If he waits a week, then he'd be announcing after the portal closed for all schools other than a&m and Texas, and then every aggie would be screaming from the rooftops "they timed it like this on purpose! They could've done this a week ago so we could start on our replacement search!!!"
