A&M and Texas are both Flagship Universities in Texas, that is how it was structured. We also have a larger research spend than any University for 1000 miles in any direction, including that smaller and newer school in Austin.

I'm curious why wikipedia (i know, wikipedia) lists North Texas as being classified a flagship school. Does it have something to do with graduate programs, research, multiple universities within system, etc? I'm honestly curious. Houston is also listed, so I guess my question applies to them as well

You are a professor, which is the flagship of California?

I've heard mainly UCLA and Berkley lay claim to the title.

University of California, Berkeley is the flagship institution of the University of California System.

I believe that the University of Florida is not actually the flagship of the State University of Florida system. However they are recognized as one of two "preeminent" universities in that system by the state legislature.

This I did not know. The first three don't surprise, but UNT?? Wow.

Well we kick the shite out of FSU in both academics and athletics. That's good enough for me.

That's not right.
Texas has six university systems--the UH System being but one of em (Texas A&M System, UTex System, North Texas System, Texas Tech System, Texas State).
Each system has it's own flagship university.
But only two universities are state flagships.
The state continues to weigh the merits of increasing the number of flagship universities though.

The word flagship has a different connotation in the State of Texas:

UNT/UH/Tech are the flagship universities of their respective systems just like UT-Austin and Texas A&M are of their systems. I'm fairly certain the Texas State University System does not have a designated flagship university (as this system was originally tasked with being teachers' colleges).

We even have independent public universities with their own regents (SFA, TWU, Midwestern State and Texas Southern)

UT-Austin and A&M are the only "Tier 1" public universities in the state - another nebulous term created by the Legislature to dangle in front of Boards of Regents to get donations up so the state can lower funding further.

The Texas higher education system is fricked thanks to mismanagement and politics. Texas A&M and UT-Austin were spared much of this because of the surprisingly well-managed mineral wealth. However, the system schools below them exist on pittances. Our state has definitely strived for quantity over quality.

As for California, UC-Berkeley is the equivalent institution for the University of California but UCLA is essentially 1B. UCSD and UC-Davis aren't anything to sneeze at either.

ETA: that was to elaborate (and rant) on points made by EKG

neither is Irvine. the UC school system is mismanaged but its schools are great. of the ten schools, the only three ones who aren't great are santa cruz, merced, and riverside. santa cruz is still pretty damn good and merced is only like 9 years old
