Legit question regarding alabama clout and the polls

GRTiger in the coaches poll thread got me thinking about how funny perception is. It got me thinking...
In the week 3 poll, alabama was 2nd (with a 1st place vote) and ole miss was 11th. After their 6 point win over alabama, ole miss skyrocketed 6 spots up to number 5 while alabama fell to 12. So waht does that tell us? Teh coaches (or rather, the people filling out their ballots) thought that ole miss beat a really, really good team and deserved to be top 5, while alabama is probably overrated.
So that brings us to now. Georgia is 6th and Alabama 13th. Based on who is ahead of us in the polls, it's entirely likely that we could beat alabama and not move up any.
Does anyone else think this is insane? Team B can beat Team A and move up 6 spots...then 2 weeks later Team C beats Team A and doesn't go anywhere? I'm not really making any point in particular I'm just rambling here, but it jsut seems odd that 2 teams beating the same 3rd team can have wildly varying results afterwards. Hopefully we'd at LEAST move up 2 spots but ya never know.
*I'm not saying we will win, this is all hypothetical and is strictly about the polls.

It's probably because Fournette >> Chubb.

If we beat Alabama, this is what will happen, unless Clemson beats Notre Dame.

What it all boils down to is if you continue to win you will make the dance. I think UGA will lose to Bama Saturday by 17 points. Georgia will not run and throw all over that defense and we played Ole Miss a great ball game we just made too many mistakes to win. If Georgia thinks they are going to a picnic next Saturday they will lose by more than 17.

of course you do, for some unknown reason you have a deep seeded hatred for UGA. Not sure why.
But that's not the point of the thread. The point was how silly it is that ole miss can beat bama and move up 6 spots, then 2 weeks later UGA could (again, this is a hypothetical, not saying it will happen) beat bama and not go anywhere.

Yeah, I'm sure that's what we think you fricking idiot.

What if they win by 17 though without wild turnover margin?

More than 17? I don't think we win but we aren't gonna get shellacked.
And you don't play a great game when you turn the ball over 5 times.

Its not that hard to understand. Ole Miss moved up because we were number 2 when they beat us and it is early in the season. IF we lose again which would be extremely rare the press would assume that this alabama team is not as good as teams in the past. People do not expect Alabama to lose ever and when we do the team that beats us moves up. If we lose two this early in the year then we don't really know how good either team is that beat us.

in that case, shouldn't ole miss move down as well since they're supposed awesome win now doesn't mean as much?
That won't ever happen, I know it won't. I'm just saying.

Good point.
I've noticed more movement in polls this season than ever before. Teams are moving up 10 spots in one week. I think the AP and coaches are trying to mirror the playoff and rank teams each week according to what they look like that week. If Bama beats UGA, we are probably back to 6 or 7. If UGA wins, they could be like 3 at that point if Ole Miss struggles. You used to have to have teams in front of you lose to move up. Not anymore. Its a new poll every week now basically based on this past saturdays results.

Not more insane than a team that went into their own stadium and beat them having to play again in the championship.

Simple understanding of how the polls work. Ole Miss beat a higher ranked team in Alabama on the road so of course they move up. If UGA beats a lower ranked team in Alabama at home they were suppose to considering UA will probably be the underdog. So no reason to move UGA at all since they did what they did.
Now based on your logic of UA moves up it is only because we beat a very overrated UGA

Your'e not kidding. There have been some MAJOR shifts week to week.....which I'm actually a really big fan of.

Maybe I just have a negative view of how pollsters view us, but I don't think so. Ole miss struggled mightily at home against a vandy team we beat by 17 on the road, yet they didn't get punished for that. Baylor should win and TCU isn't very good yet will probably win again anyway. If we beat bama, I wholeheartedly agree we deserve to be 3rd but I guarantee you we wont' be.

And once again...I LOVE IT. I just hope we benefit from it like others have. If we're being honest TCU should have fallen a few spots.

Until Georgia actually does something you are going to have to deal with better programs getting the benefit of the doubt. If you beat Bama you might move back up from #8
Alabama has proven they can lose and come back and win a title (albeit not yet the most legitimate one). Georgia has not.

I don't understand how a close loss to a strong SEC rival warranted a 10 spot fall, especially when the team Bama lost to was then recognized as a top 5 team as well...I haven't seen a drop like that since Auburn beat Jacksonville State!!!

These things are fun to talk about 3-4 weeks in but by mid December it has a way of working itself out.

I made a thread on this or pointed this out before. In all my decades of football I have never seen such huge shifts like this.
