I expect them to be better than the last couple of years. They may steal a game here and there but they won't win the west nor do anything of real note in his tenure

No two schemes are the same but the air raid was dangerous when it was the only one of its kind, like UK in the late 90's. It was an equalizer vs more talented teams. Ds were not built nor used to defending the ball in the air 40+ times per game. Not anymore. Teams with much better talent now are airing it out. Even if they score some points the better teams will out score them.

Nobody thinks we can win the West but we believe that Leach can win 8 or 9 games per year. Most of fans are okay with going 6-6 or 7-5 in his first year.

You see the talent he had? JoMo would've won 4-5 a year in the West once all of his players got there.

State fired an 8-4/6-6 coach that did not fit in, was dull and forgettable and would have resulted in the lowest season ticket sales since the Croom error for an 8-4/6-6 coach that will excite the fanbase, keep Mississippi State in the national spotlight and might slip up and pull an upset or two along the way.

Which coach would go to Mississippi State and win the West?

Mississippi State is the 5th most talented team, at best in its division. In the years where it plays UT, Georgia and Florida, it’s the 6th most talented team, at best, on its schedule. The Egg Bowl is a toss up almost every year.

The only real certainty on State’s schedule every year are Arkansas and Kentucky.

What would you really expect from State?

We'll see; many prognosticators seem to think they are, personally, able to predict the future.

Especially if they ;-) team is a good one.

Not sure if typo or well done word play... Will err on side of benefit of doubt.

So the guy that just lost to Air Force in his bowl game and gave up 67 points to a 4-8 UCLA team will win 8-9 games per year in the SEC West?

I could totally see it!

It is hard to tell how Leach will do in the SEC. Maybe he will get the players to really crank his offense up.

We might also get the coach who has a noted tendency to lose to FCS level programs several years into his coaching tenure at a school.

Leach is very feast or famine. I'm not saying that to knock Leach or Miss. State. That is just the pattern he's established in his career.

I disagree.

First, "airing it out" is not the air raid offense. Anybody can throw it alot from any style of offense. It does not make it the air raid.

Second, Ms St... with a broken up defense that graduated a ton of talent to the NFL and had 3 starters suspended for the year allowed LSU the least amount of yards and points.

Third, Ms ST has always had some of the better defenses....

I expect them to be 3rd in the west, with a shot at 2nd or 4th. And they are young.

Leach won 17 games against teams with more talent (247 rankings) over the last 3 years. We did pretty well with Mullen, but if you had more talent, you probably won. If you had less talent, you probably lost.

He's going to make things interesting.

Yeah, the guy didn't give that up. The WSU defense did, and MS ST has never been a horrible defense.

Your point?

They allowed you 36 points. Second only to Auburn (23) and they return most of that defense. Auburn does not.

You barely broke 400 yards. Saying that Ms St will just somehow fall off the planet on defense because of the air raid is beyond stupid.

Ms ST is not WSU. The recruiting is way different. You are going down the stupid path. No matter what coach Ms ST has had, they have always fielded a defense to be concerned about.

The defense Ms ST returns will be dangerous. The style of defense they are going to run made Ms St notable in the 90s/early 2000s. The Sec has not seen that defense ran in 20 years. They return a ton of talent on that side of the ball.

I never said it was, and even stated no two schemes are alike. Still in the 90's Bama, LSU, AU, Tennessee and even Florida ran pro sets. Fullbacks were on the field for a large % of plays, especially on 1st and 2nd down. You needed bigger LBs and safeties, and lined up in regular personnel on D a lot. Your recruiting and roster management was based on that.

A team that took away that base personnel basically all game was a change of pace. Now you rarely if ever line up with 3 true LBs on the field at the same time, except on maybe goal line situations. Most teams recruit somewhat smaller but faster backers.
