The evolution of the equipment really is interesting. 15 years ago the low profile pads felt and looked so much more compact than the pads 15 years prior to then and now themselves look way bigger than the current pads.

The same is true with jerseys and helmets. As to the knee pads it’s partially looks partially speed and comfort. I guess the trade off against protection is worth it, there is only so much that can be explained by it being just “trendy”.

One would think that..............until you look at a Walter Payton. It didn't hinder him any. Erick Dickerson wore everything but the kitchen sink. Hell, thermals never hindered Reggie White. You never see an OL or DL wearing them now. I believe it's all about perception with today's players.

Certainly could be. It’s all relative though, sure it didn’t slow Walter Payton down but he was playing when everyone was wearing them.

I think the real perception with these guys is feeling. As in tight, lightweight, and relatively dry feels better than waterlogged and loose. Pads can get waterlogged and sag around the knee. Does it really effect the player much? Probably only very rarely, but in their minds it’s a much bigger issue.

Just a hunch.

The players are technically still required to wear them but they’ll get around it by wearing shorter pants and using smaller knee pads - to the point that it sits above the knee.

The knee pad doesn't stay over the knee anyways, at least the traditionally sized knee pads. It ends up above your knee leaving your knee exposed.

Knee pads?

For some reason I really noticed it last week in the VT/OD game.

There was one guy from OD who was running around with what looked like mid-thigh bike shorts on.

(This isn't that guy, but illustrative anyway.)

ED may have been king of pads (but still quick as a cat & would run your butt over )

It's all relative when everyone else is wearing the same.

It's pretty obvious someone would have more mobility minus the hip pads he's wearing along with smaller shoulder pads players are wearing today.
