I don't have a problem w/ the claim that UTx has a "more historic" program than A&M. In terms of on-field success, they undeniably do.

But past performance does not guarantee future results, and right now, the future looks pretty bleak for horns compared that of their former (non)rival.

Last I checked he wasn't offered a job while he was at Houston
And everyone knows he wouldn't leave A&M right now

UT laughs at this. Make no bones about it, UT is the UA of Texas. A&M is a solid school and program, just like Auburn - there just happens to be a more historic program sharing the state. Not a bad position to be in.

Texas A&M and Auburn are actually a lot alike. They are both the second program in a 2 big program state. They both play second fiddle to a program with more football history in terms of championships. They both are not as snooty as their in-state rival. They are both agg schools.

They both have a similar football history. Auburn has 2 national championships. Texas A&M has 1 (plus an additional one they claim and a third they do not claim but have been given by a few sources). Auburn has 11 conference titles (7 in the SEC) Texas A&M has 18 conferecne titles (all but one was in the Southwest Conference). Aubunr has 721 wins and 22 bowl wins. Texas A&M 693 wins and 15 bowl wins. So over time, both schools are pretty much in the same territory when it comes to program prestige.

A&M has 1 thing going for it that Auburn does not: Close proximnity to the #10 metro area (Houston)in the country, also close to the #8 metro area (Metroplex) of the country, both of which are in the same state. Auburn is close to thr #11 metro area in the country (Atlanta) but as that is in Georgia, Auburn will never have the same foothold there as A&M can get in Houston and Dallas. There are just more kids in the state of Texas for Bevo and the Aggs to share than are in the state of Alabama for the Tide and Tigers to share.

Plus, Texas A&M can use the "We are in the SEC, Texas is not" argument when recruiting in the state of Texas. Auburn cannot use that against Alabama, or against Georgia if they try to recruit Atlanta.

So, A&M is a slightly more attractive job than is Auburn. Boht are great jobs.

My post wasn't a dig at A&M. If so, I was digging at AU just the same. It is what it is.

This is a real test season, win when you are expected to. Many coaches can win when there are no/low expectations. It's like golfing on Sunday with the lead when you are expected to win. I like the way Sumlin sounds. Not impressed with his lack of control over the face of his team. All that said, I hope he has long term success. Now batting...

Auburn should have kept Tuberville. Every time Auburn has one bad season, they fire their coach.

Tuberville would have had no chance recruiting against Saban. He went hunting in the middle of the biggest recruiting stretches. Also, he kept the same "good ole boys" on his coaching staff, no matter how bad they did. We would have never been better than average

He seemed to run off some pretty good coordinators too. Tubs just seemed to never get along with boosters/alum, and had the attitude of not caring.

What a bs thread!

1. Last Head Coach to voluntarily leave Texas A&M was Bear Bryant.

2. Sumlin has enough talent in his backyard to be able to recruit a MNC team without taking a single OOS player.

Why would he leave that?

Very good post (especially for an LSU fan) and I agree with everything you said

My OP is based on hindsight and I understand that at the time the Auburn job was open, A&M looked like the much safer bet. However, should things go south in College Station I'm sure Kevin Sumlin will think about all of the other options he let pass

Also you guys are acting as if Chizik was the first coach at Auburn to have a losing season and get fired. Tubs had a losing seasons and wasn't ran out of town by an angry mob. The off the field issues and on field performance combined to make things difficult for Chizik to remain coach

That's saying a fricking LOT.
