Does he really think he's better than them and wants to prove it? That seems to be more risky than going to a school like UK where he'd be the sure starter and his talents would be on display a lot more.

If he really thinks he's better than Bama's other choices for QB, it makes sense to me that he'd want to be the big fish in the smaller pond rather than be in a lake with fish that are bigger than him.

Your question's answer is actually at the center of Saban's/Alabama's success over the decade. Kids with the confidence in their own ability and the willingness to work harder than the others to be the best are the kids that sign on at Alabama (why else would they?). If you're the best at a position there, then you'll get your shot at the next level...maybe even 2nd or 3rd best.
