Saban (Bama)
2022: 11-2
2023: 12-2
Kalen DeBoer (Bama)
2024: 9-4
2025: 11-4
What grade would you give DeBoer following the GOAT?
I would give him a C.
Let's look at this statistically. Alabama coaches with back-to-back seasons of 4 or more losses in the last 50 years:
Kalen DeBoer - 2024/25
Mike Shula - 2003/04
Mike DuBose - 1997/98
Ray Perkins - 1983/84
The interesting fact is...if Bama loses 4 or more games this season, it will be the first time a coach has lost 4 or more in 3 consecutive seasons since Jennings Whitworth, who did from 1955-1957...and he is the only coach to have done it in the history of Alabama football. We could witness something that happens once in a lifetime.

Y’all’s only win in the expanded playoff is against Oklahoma! They haven’t won a playoff game in their history! Do you care to know what Oklahoma’s playoff record is? Not to mention LSU won 7 games this year. We SHOULD have beat OU in Norman and we absolutely gave yall all yall wanted. Nuss playing would have absolutely beat yall. Just wait, you’ll get your come uppance this coming first Saturday in November!

Bama fans seem to be giving him some slack, so I'm curious to know what grade they would give him.
I stopped watching in 2019, but any non genius can see there is a flaw here with any comparisons.
Saban had it running like a well oiled machine when he left for Miami, the players were a part of the culture that held the younger players feet to the fire. Now that you have unlimited transfers and players making big bucks, itsa totally different duck being hunted.
Finebaum after 2012 could have coached Bama to a 11-2 season. In 2023 why did Saban quit? The ignorant players wanted money after the loss.
I am going to laugh in about 3-4 years when you all finally figure out there is no CFB anymore.

I’ll be honest Saban left him a wreck with Milroe. It was a losing situation having to play him.
To be clear, Milroe was a project and was never supposed to be "the guy."
Drake Maye was, and he fricked us when he committed to Alabama and then flipped right when covid hit and we couldn't recruit anyone else.
This year's Super Bowl (Maye vs Milroe on the bench) is exceedingly ironic.

He looked like peak Michael Vick against LSU every time we played him

The most mystifying (and frustrating) thing about Milroe was the difference between the Michael Vick version vs LSU and the Ryan Leaf version vs Tennessee, where it would just randomly appear like he had never played QB in his entire life.

Every team is dealing with that. There is no special disadvantage for Alabama.

Kalen Deboer had more wins in his first two seasons at Alabama than any other Alabama coach in history.
Deboer - 20
Saban - 19
Shula - 10
Francione - 17
Dubose - 11
Stallings - 18
Curry - 16
Perkins - 13
Bryant - 12
Whitworth - 2
Thomas - 17
Wade - 15
Scort - 18
Kelley - 12
Graves -10
Pollard -10
Deboer - 20
Saban - 19
Shula - 10
Francione - 17
Dubose - 11
Stallings - 18
Curry - 16
Perkins - 13
Bryant - 12
Whitworth - 2
Thomas - 17
Wade - 15
Scort - 18
Kelley - 12
Graves -10
Pollard -10

Good point...let's look at what he took over...what was the winning % the last 2 years of the coaches before these guys??
DeBoer has won 20/28 or 71.4% of his games...here is the winning % of the last two years of each coach...so you can see what the next coach was taking over:
DeBoer - current coach
Saban - 23/27 - 85.2%
Shula - 16/25 - 64.0%
Francione - 17/25 - 68.0%
Dubose - 13/24 - 54.2%
Stallings - 18/24 - 75.0%
Curry - 19/24 - 79.2%
Perkins - 14/22 - 63.6%
Bryant - 17/24 (1 tie) - 72.9%
Whitworth - 4/20 (2 ties) - 25.0%
Drew - 10/23 (5 ties) - 54.4%
Thomas - 17/21 - 81.0%
Wade - 16/19 - 84.2%
Scott - 11/21 (3 ties) - 59.5%
Kelley - 11/17 (1 tie) - 67.7%
Graves - 11/18 - 61.1%
*Lowman & Pollard 9/16 (2 ties) - 62.5%
*Leavenworth & Blount - 13/20 - 65.0%
*Lowman and Leavenworth only coached a single season...so the 2 years prior to Graves and Pollard coaching their first seasons were shared by 2 coaches.
As you can see...nobody comes close to the winning percentage Alabama had in the 2 years leading up to DeBoer taking over for Saban. It also shows what an amazing coach Bryant was...taking over for a program that had only won 25% of its games in the 2 years prior.
I would add that, while DeBoer has won more games in his first 2 seasons than any other Bama coach...he has also coached more games in his first 2 seasons than any other Bama coach.

The SEC Rant: “Hahaha, Alabama lost half their roster when Saban retired!”
Also the SEC Rant: “Deboer inherited the greatest roster in football!”

Frankly, Les Miles got lucky that 2007 was such a wild year for the BCS to handle and back-doored a national title. He inarguably underachieved the roster losing 4 games in the first two years. Losing to Georgia in 2005 was just silly and they got stomped by them in the SECCG. Katrina fricking their schedule up can explain that away I suppose.
2006 is the year I think pisses most LSU fans off the most. He had arguably the most talented roster we’ve ever had outside of 2019 and still found a way to frick it up.

This is how they deal with 6 in a row…..

If Les went 11-2 in 2005, 11-2 in 2006 and 12-2 in 2007 with an SEC and NC, just imagine what Saban would have done!
