Who was the greater coach in their respective sport? I have to go with Bryant because he didn't need Sam Gilbert's money to win.

I go Wooden. The streak those UCLA teams had will never be duplicated in sports.

He certainly ran a cleaner program than Wooden or Cheat Carroll.

John Wooden

I dont think anybody in any sport can say they won 10 championships in 11 years. (Boston Celtics of the 1950's and 1960's won 10 in 12 years)

Bear Bryant was a great coach but he only won 7 national championships, so Im going with Coach Wooden.

ETA: Wooden will contribute for years and years after his life with his pyramid of success as well.

riiiiiiight

quote:

In his later years Bryant admitted that as a driven young coach, he would have done almost anything to win. He built his Kentucky teams in the late '40s and early '50s partly by paying players to come in from Ohio and Pennsylvania. At Texas A&M, which he took from 1-9 in 1954 to the Cotton Bowl three years later, he was punished by the NCAA for recruiting violations

Its part of his resume. Thus part of his coaching career. It counts.

Even though I love Coach Bryant and believe he is the greatest college football coach of all time, it has to be Wooden. What that man did was absolutely incredible and will never again be matched. They come from different sports and Coach Bryant was certainly dominant at times in his career, but what Wooden had was TOTAL domination.
