Probably not, but maybe he's learned how to color inside the lines.

I wish him the best. I don't think it is fair or accurate to call him 'dumb'. Sounds like he has endured to very valid issues pertaining to his learning abilities.
Hopefully his athletic ability will shine through and he can continue to progress academically and have a shot a pro football.
No need to ridicule or belittle the guy.

I've had a couple of friends sit down and have chats with him. Everyone will pretty much tell you he comes off as one of the nicest people you'll ever run into. You have to give it to a kid that stuck with it as long as he did. Hopefully, he'll make it worth it this year and go onto the NFL.
It's a feel good story, even if Ole Miss is the only school an illiterate kid could pull a 2.3 at.

I'm all for good natured banter 'twixt LSU and Ole Miss fans about the rivalry. I guess its the dad in me. If anyone could have said screw it,it was Powe. Big John Henderson had some issues in HS which made him Prop 48 and he wound up graduating from UT and making All-American.
Bet you there are plenty of folks from several SEC schools on this board that made less than 2.3 a few,if not every semester.

Yeah, I know Powe did the work to get the grades. I'm sure he had tutors and other people around that most others wouldn't have had, but he still had to go in and take the tests. Nothing wrong with giving someone like him a little praise for a job well done.
Now I'm just hoping he's as good on the football field as advertised. I mean, a big nasty DT never hurt anyone's chances.

but how does one go from not being able to read to passing college classes in 3 years?
Kinesiology. oh wait, that's State's program.
I'm sure by remedial classes and PE.

How on Earth did Dontae Jones pass 32 hrs of summer school in 1995 ?

Considering he's older than I am, probably not my best choice of words.

Here's a pretty good article on Powe becoming eligible.
Original Article Per SEC Sports Hub:
Jerrell Powe Eligible in 2008
BY: Thomas Goldkamp
On Monday, the University of Mississippi annonced that defensive tackle Jerrell Powe has been ruled eligible to play during the 2008 season. Powe was the third ranked defensive tackle in the nation when he came out of high school in 2005.
After attending Hargrave Military Academy due to non-qualifying scores out of high school, Powe endured a long wait to finally become eligible.
The mammoth defensive tackle now figures to immediately play into the Ole Miss rotation along the defensive line, and could very well start during the 2008 season. Powe is 6'3, 350 lbs. and should be an immediate contributor.
His addition gives Ole Miss one of the strongest defensive lines in the conference, led by defensive end Greg Hardy and defensive tackle Peria Jerry.
Powe said, "I am deeply grateful to Ole Miss and to the SEC for the opportunity to be admitted here and to prove that I can succeed academically and on the football field... I still must prove myself on the football field in the SEC."
By all accounts, Powe will be a force to be reckoned with in 2008.

Good for this kid. I'm happy for him, however, it was a disgrace for the university to allow him in the first place. Before coming to OM the kid couldn't read or write, and now he has 23 semester hours completed. Like the poster said earlier, this from a school who touts itself as having one of the best academics in the whole country.
Now, the OM fans have stated they have the best DL in the whole SEC. They do have ONE of the best depending on how Powe performs. Greg Hardy, Peria Jerry, and Powe. I still like LSU's chances over that DL by a slight margin.
I have also heard rumors that if Powe has a good/decent year, he will go ahead and go pro b/c of his age.
