I wouldn't go that far... but it wouldn't hurt my feelings. This is one of those that can benefit us either way.

Auburn loses... no biggie. Oregon is a top 10 team and likely in position to run train on the Pac12. Unless they spiral, they'll still likely be an upper half SECW team. So they'll either be quality SOS material, or I'll get to enjoy a bad Auburn season and all the Fire Gus threads... Win/Win

Auburn wins... Take the wind out of the sails of the Pac12 early. Auburn looks better on our schedule and may potentially be able to put up a better fight in the West, knock Bama off at home, etc.

Thank God Auburn gave Gus that buyout. It's almost a certainty that he will be there until after the 2020 season.

Not if he has a bad season. The dumbass who gave him the contract is gone and the booster who advocated it has been neutered.

So y'all don't owe Gus over $25million anymore if he is fired after this season?

$26 mil I believe. It was discussed at great length last year after the UT loss and he was rumored to have been gone had he lost to Ole Miss as well. Maybe you don't know our history, but we aren't very patient when it comes to head coaches.

Given the contract, I think he's still safe this year, barring a 6 (maybe 7) win or worse season. The schedule is pretty brutal... getting UGA/Bama at home helps, but it means a lot of the more "winnable" good SEC games are on the road.

It's not just Jerryworld. I hate it whenever its at a neutral site, and not on a college campus. It really kills the ambiance of the whole thing.

Jerryworld is especially bad though.

He might survive 7, depending on who he beats. I think Greene runs out of patience with 6 wins. Even with that schedule, 6 wins is unacceptable given his recruiting and pretty good facilities.

Maybe I don't. What coaches have y'all fired that had similar buyouts? Wasn't Chizik's considered large, and it was only in the $6-$7mil range?

$9 mil I believe. I can't find the details of Malzahn's, but I remember that only a small part was due upon firing and the rest was spread-out over 5 years. The scuttlebutt last year was a couple of boosters (Rane being one of them) had already offered-up the front end of it.
Who really knows what goes on behind the scene, but there was a lot of smoke last October. The one thing to consider is the people directly involved in the extension are all gone, saving them the embarrassment of correcting that asinine contract.

Exactly. I think 6 wins and he's toast. 7 is probably real-damn-close but safe. 8 and he's not going anywhere at least until after 2020.

Trying to work through a 7 win season that still nets getting fired:

*Oregon - W
Tulane - W
Kent St - W
@aTm
Miss St - W
@Florida
@Arkansas - W
@LSU
Ole Miss - W
UGA
Samford - W
Alabama

Maybe something like that, with Oregon ending up tanking their season or something? That or a win over aTm, and they struggle through a really tough schedule as well.

The losses to Bama, UGA and LSU are frustrating, but somewhat understandable. Losing to 1st year coaches like Pruitt and Moorhead are what really got him into hot water last year. He needs to take care of the games he's supposed to win and maybe beat one of those three, considering two of them are at home.

Right. That's why I was thinking losing all 3 of those games along with losses to one or more of Dan Mullen, Jimbo, Cristobal, or Moorhead might be enough to tip the scales, even if he managed 7 wins.

If he wins one of UGA/Bama/LSU and wins 7, gotta imagine he's still safe for 2020 as well. The buyout number is just so damn big. The contract was pure insanity given how split the fanbase was on him to begin with.

Note: I say *all* of this knowing full well that this is the kind of season where Auburn comes out, wins 11 in the regular season and fricking leaves everyone scratching their heads.

This is a fascinating match up. Big, physical NFL prospect qb (Herbert) for the Ducks. Auburn, big defensive front with depth & may go with freshman Qb.
Oregon & Pac 12 need big win for conference respect.
Auburn needs it simply due to difficult schedule.
Could easily see Corso, Herbie & the gang with split decision on gameday picks.

You’ve never set foot on the Auburn campus, other than maybe to go to a few football games. I can prove it with a few questions. Care to play?
