The AD involved in that was not renewed.

Would have preferred to take a Virginia school and UNC before
adding Texas and Oklahoma.

What evidence do you have losing for long periods of time erodes good fan bases? Jets have plenty of fans. Neb was the bluest blue blood in 95, they currently haven’t been to a bowl since 2016ish they’re fine. Arky the last ten years? Usce? Penn st kept the house packed during pedo penalty years
Nebraska had the longest home sell out record in football. I lived in that area during the 90s and was there for the 95 season.
The only way they've been able to keep that record going the last years is because boosters have been buying up empty seats.
Additionally, they've removed thousands of seats from the stadium to help keep it going. And they keep removing more in their attempts to keep that record going. In fact, their renovations scheduled to be finished in 2026 takes out an additional 15,000 seats.
They also have much lower ticket costs and damn near give many of the unsold tickets away.
It was a record that started way back in 1962.
It's also possible their streak has already ended and they just never announced it. At this point, it's really just a lie either way since in 2022 over 2000 tickets were bought by a single person for $10 a ticket.
So Nebraska IS actually an example.

Why? Those schools have zero football history. Is the idea to only add teams that have no chance of upsetting the apple cart?

Speaking of new traditions, in the SEC “UT” has been reserved for the University of Tennessee.
That isn’t even a concern. Feel free to call us TX. We’re proud to represent the whole state.

And yet you don’t represent the whole state.
Most of the state doesn’t align with your culture.
You’re like Berkeley. But with more tents.

We don’t dwell on the UT symbol. We’re Texas, we go by Texas. No extra letters or words like Texas Tech, Texas Christian, Texas Southern, Texas State, or A&M. We’re Texas. Everyone knows exactly who we are, the team with the state symbol on our helmets. Back when Texas high school football played all star games against Pennsylvania, all the media there called our teams Longhorns. Some universities represent their states with unique to them names. You say Volunteers, they represent the Volunteer state. Same with North Carolina Tar Heels, Oklahoma Sooners, Florida Gators, etc. We’re Texas. When you say UT in Texas, everyone knows who you mean. I’m sure it’s the same in Tennessee.

SEC leadership knew this in the late 80s, and the ball was rolling for Texas and TAMU to join when the SWC died.
Texas Governor Anne Richards (Baylor) and Lt. Governor Bob Bullock (Texas Tech) fricked it up.
Because of that, SEC had to swallow Missouri 20 years later.
This is true. I guess alot of folks aren't aware of what happened 30 years ago.

I said that, jokingly, just to get a predictable response from you. Things happen in Austin that make me proud and things happen there that embarrass me. Either way, it’s still the school I love.

If Texas is Berkeley, is College Station SF?

As an A&M fan I selfishly like the idea of Texas and OU in the SEC. It ensures that the SEC is the only conference that really matters in the state, and creates a moat around our program that prevents a TCU or Texas Tech from being "the second biggest program in Texas" simply because of their success on the field. As someone who went to A&M during a Big 12 era when Mike Leach almost singlehandedly snuffed out our brand this is good for us.
And its good for Texas and OU too. OU gets access to new areas to recruit talent with their national brand, and Texas gets a pile of rivalries back. The SEC gets a ton of money, and the stupid divisions have gone away. Its a rare win win in conference realignment.

The biggest winner was ESPN.

Argh.
When Tceh is good, it’s bad for everyone.
I agree with your thesis though.

Ok, so how much more does each SEC team get now?
Or, is it just giving the extra teams the same revenue as the other teams? Meaning, there isn't actually any extra money for the "SEC".
If each team is still getting the same payout as before, then there was no increase.

Of course not yet, its in the future.
But projections have the SEC going from $850 million a year to $1.1 billion in revenue or an increase of $250 million. Even after Texas and OU get paid there will be a lot left over for all the other SEC programs.

You do understand the revenue gets split among teams right? So more teams = more splits between the revenue
No I had no idea. I thought we got to keep all the Texas revenue and not pay them a cent. Of course I know that. In the short term, ESPN is only paying us a pro rata share because that is all they contractually have to do, but in the next negotiation round, Texas and OU will be huge revenue generators, even when split.

It gets increased every contract renewal anyway.
Just don't see how this increases the revenue for the schools.

It gets increased anyway. Your claim is that ESPN is going to start overpaying because the SEC added 2 teams?
Doubt it.
