I have kind of noticed a trend. The less seriously people take football, the shittier their team is.

Probably true to some extent but never was the case with Bama post-Starling, pre-Saban. Honestly surprised no one tried to murder DuBose or Shula.

Taking it "seriously" doesn't make you a good fan. Most Bama fans are fans on the emotional level. They can't talk X's and O's. They don't know the players. They don't know the strategies. They can't dissect what is happening on any given play.
It is really all about pride of place, loyalty, and being "better" than other fanbases -- as if the football team's success reflects in anyway on the fans themselves.
That's my personal experience with Bama fans. Of course there are more and less intelligent fans in every fanbase. I'm painting with broad strokes here.
BUT -- in terms of which fanbase attaches the most EMOTIONAL significance to the success of the football team -- it is Bama. Hands down. No contest. That's what makes the OP so ironic.
