the competition is much stiffer today. more teams have close to the same resources as each other and more rules are in place to make it harder to get a dynasty.

Good point. Runs like this in the scholarship limit era (not to mention the every game is televised era) are more impressive than runs of the past.

And obviously 2007 LSU doesn't go around bragging about being a great team. Know why? Because they weren't. 2011 Alabama demolished every single team they played in 2011 except LSU the first time. 2007 LSU lost two games and played several other close games that easily could have been losses. Alabama's closest margin of victory outside of LSU was like 12 or 15 points or something.

Uhhhh.........2007 LSU was a great team. LSU schedule in 2007 was 10 times what Bama played in 2011. Sidenote; 2007 LSU also won the SEC outright.

People like to downplay Alabama's championships no matter what (while ignoring the fact that other team's championships can be picked at too)

Well, that's the problem with the BCS, and the college postseason in general....you can pick at just about ALL previous National Championships...

For the BCS years, only 2005 and 1999 were really solid years with no arguments...every other year has problems.

2003 was a complete failure of the BCS, and 2004 had two undefeated teams sitting there with nothing to show....an undefeated SEC champ no less

'97 - split champs
'96 - Florida mulligan, Ohio State with nothing
'95 - no arguments here for the most part...
'94 - Nebraska champs, Penn State nothing
'93 - FSU champs, Notre Dame hanging in the wind
so on and so forth....

People downplay them because enormity of fortune that went into them is only exceeded by their fan's claims that these championships demonstrate all time greatness. The ratio is out of whack.

Well said...

How many schools would have beat Notre Dame last year? Texas A&M would have annihilated the Irish...

no doubt, it was lucky that a lot of other schools lost so that LSU was still in the hunt....

Did LSU have a better argument over USC that year?

It's not irrelevant at all. If you're going to argue that Alabama was gifted a chance at the title in 2011, how is it any different from what happened with LSU in 2007?

Both teams were gifted chances they seemingly pissed away earlier in the year. In that sense, they are comparable. I think LSU fans freely admit that and recognize the fortune and don't turn it into some proof of all time greatness. Alabama fans do not seem to see it that way, they see their role in that game as merely their right despite being the least accomplished/deserving BCSCG participant outside of Nebraska 01.

However, LSU 07 accomplished much more than Alabama 11, especially in a system that claims "every game counts." I get the irony of that, but it's unheard of to get a second bite at the apple. LSU won their division, conference, and had wins over 4 ranked teams. The team closest in the BCS they bead badly head to head. USC and Oklahoma both lost to truly terrible teams (Stanford, Colorado) and their successes did not exceed what LSU had done.

At the time Alabama had two wins over ranked teams (Arkansas and PSU (around 24/25) and how many wins over teams with losing records? They lost their biggest game at home. That's a gift, but acknowledge it for what it was.

luck is a factor in every championship run....don't think it isn't because that's foolish.

Well thank god championship games aren't decided by some nerdy internet forum peon. Are you trying to say Alabama wasn't the best team in 2011??

Are you trying to say that Alabama earned their right to play for that championship? Perhaps it was God's will that allowed them the opportunity?

Alabama is still the only champ without a division or conference title to go along with it in the history of the BCS. Point is...you tell me.

They earned it....destroyed everyone that year..it's obvious you're an asshurt LSU fan. Do I really have to point out how much better Alabama was than LSU in 2011? I'm sorry that was your greatest team in the history of your school....but that's the way the cookie crumbles bruh...

If that were true, they would not have needed ESPN to give them a mulligan and there would be no controversy.

Definitely.....and I don't really care. I don't think 2 losses should prevent a team from playing for a national championship.

Riveting tale, chap.

What, the 2 teams that split a 2-game series?

I'm sorry that was your greatest team in the history of your school.

Negative. Maybe top 5 team.

Regardless, Alabama '11 is still the only BCS championship without a conference or division title to go along with it.

Not at all. 2 of your 3 you were beat in the regular season. 1 of them you didn't even win your'e division.

but 1 loss to a great team should???.....I know you're already going to bring up conference championship and stuff....but this brings me to Notre Dame...who obviously would never play in one ever again according to your stipulations. I know playoffs are here....but you get what I'm saying.
