Is this the cost of finally getting the playoffs in CFB?

I'm completely aware that we got stomped by a better A&M team on Thursday... but late in the fourth quarter with a huge lead Sumlin kept calling passing plays going for the end zone. He was going for it on fourth down several times. His entire starting offense was in there for the whole game. Even when he has a freshman QB that could have gotten valuable experience against an SEC defense (of sorts). Is this going to be the new norm?

One of the good things about the later years of the BCS was that it diminished, to an extent, running up the score. Sportsmanship seemed to rule the day. But with the uncertainty of this new committee picking the playoff teams it seems fair game again. And I, personally, don't like it.

I always viewed taking a knee as a much more significant sign of dominance than just scoring more points against someone you've already proved you can do it against. Or even if your scoring with your second and third string because they can't be stopped it's at least less of a slap in the face. Running up the score, no matter who it's against, just always seemed classless.

Or maybe Sumlin's just a douche (or was maybe a nod to Spurrier's douche past)?

PS -- If this was brought up over the weekend then I apologize... but I was licking my wounds and letting the SEC Rant reaction die down some. Head in the sand is truly the way to go through life...

ETA -- Don't be lazy... Read all the posts before adding to the conversation... k thnx, bai...

Go back and listen to what he had to say on the subject when he was at Florida.

I don't think Spurrier is a douche, but I most certainly know that he is no different now than he ever was.

Its important to teach a young QB how to not show mercy against much inferior opponents.

Who cares? Running up the score is more fun than a grindfest in the fourth quarter. It's the defenses job to stop it. Screw sportsmanship. Don't get me wrong, I like being a good sport as much as the next guy, but if the goal is to win a title you take no prisoners.

I wish Saban would learn a thing or two from guys like Sumlin. Grinding clock to get out of a blowout breeds complacency.

A&M's last drive was 10 minutes long.

Sumlin put in the backups, other than QB, and ran the ball continuously. He called off the dogs and milked out the clock.

Then at the very end he ran it right up the gut instead of throwing it to avoid scoring again.

We could have scored two more times if we'd wanted to. He showed SCAR a LOT of mercy.

You're complaining about someone "running the score up" with Spurrier as your coach?

Normally I don't like teams running up the score but SOS has karma coming in that respect. Besides, he can take it and gave credit to A&M after the game

He put all of our starters back in just to be the first visiting team to score 50 in Sanford.

Agreed. I don't like it when anyone does it, and I like to see a coach show respect for the opponent.

damn dude, you are ultra about the beating y'all took

A&M's last score came at the 12:09 mark in the 4th.

Those two 4th down conversions were on the last drive of the game and were both running plays designed to get short yardage needed for the first.

A&M was CLEARLY trying to just eat up all the clock on the last possession and was in no way trying to score again.

Texas A&M scored its 52nd and final point with 12:09 left in the game.

Just wanted to make sure the OP knew this.

Y'all should've scored again and gone for two to get 60. Spurrier damn sure would've done that back in the day.

Right... but don't you have another QB who would have benefited by getting some playing time in actual game environment?

Also you're crazy if you think we ran up the score.

We could have easily added 1-2 more scores had Sumlin really been ruthless.
