going from being ranked in the 80's in 2009 to the 30's in 2010= not giving two shits about fielding a defense?

Our defense has improved every year Petrino has been at Arkansas. I don't know where we ranked in the SEC last year, but it was much improved, and will be even better in '11.

I said "comparison", not "clone"
and the comparison doesn't work when you realize Petrino was 41-9 before Arkansas, took the team of a basketball school to a BCS bowl, and won it.
He's proved a lot more than Weis ever did.

finished 5th in the SEC for regular season total defense last season. LINK
finished 4th in passing defense, 4th in receiving defense.

You might as well add that to every damn post on the Rant. This is a message board, for fans to give their opinions and talk about football. That was just dumb.

Mettenberger and McCarron will probably cost LSU and Bama a game or two over the course of the season with stupid mistakes
and that makes this a stupid post.....

so, top half of the league in 2 of the 4 stats, only 0.3 points per game from top half in 3 of the 4.
not too bad for an offensive coach who inherited a terrible D and "doesn't care about defense".
EDIT: and i should add that the defense is still a work in progress. the defense required a total rebuilding job when Petrino came in. as has been said, most fans expect to see the defense improve yet again in 2011.

It's better than I thought - I guess y'all just have the perception of having a shitty defense
But your offensive production won't be as high this year, so you'll need to keep improving on D

yeah, and probably for good reason. the first two seasons were absolutely horrible, and the 2010 game against Auburn didn't help matters at all (hell, hold them to even 30 pts and we'd be around 4th in scoring defense instead of 7th)

totally agree. but i really do think the defense will improve.

While a lot of people do make stupid declaratory statements with nothing to back it up, it's not everyone. Arkansas fans are worse than most. Especially the "Arkansas WILL win the BCSCG in the next 3 years" nonsense.

based on what exactly?

The fact that we've improved on defense every year under Petrino, and we return 10 starters on defense.

Why, exactly, do you believe otherwise?

7 returning starters, no big losses of the ones gone (a few of the "starters" that left were splitting time, e.g. Broadway at CB, Crim at S, and should be easily replaced)
Players now in the system for 4 full years
Good D-Line that looks to get better
Better depth than we've ever had on that side of the ball
Lots of redshirt players
there is reason to be optimistic. i'm not saying we'll be top of the SEC or even top-3, but i do expect improvement.

this says you return 7

Because while your defense isn't atrocious anymore, it's not exactly good and I see neither an influx of talent nor a change in staff/philosophy that would lead me to think there will be much improvement. Getting from awful to mediocre is a lot easier than getting from mediocre to good.

that doesn't disprove his claim. Arkansas improved from 9th to 7th, shaving 3 ppg off the average.
also, Arkasnas was 0.3 ppg from being "top half". it's not like we were at the absolute bottom last year.
