Is Hurts Bama's Jordan Jefferson?

The freshman is an impressive young man, with a lot of confidence, and great running skills. But we know how limiting a run-mostly QB can be in the "big game".

LSU will be needing to contain him, as Bama did with Jefferson.

I know Bama fans will never see this parallel in an objective manner, but it has some real validity.

Hurts, as did JJ, will HAVE to learn how to make intermediate and long passes, as LSU's D is fo'real.

He looks better to me than JJ ever did, but probably mostly due to not having retards coaching him.

Hurts is due for a "freshman" performance

I think Aranda will let him try to be a pocket passer the whole game.

If he beats us through the air, so be it

I think he's a better runner than Jefferson. He also runs a scheme for a playcaller who is light years better than what Jefferson had.

However, generally it is a decent point.

This.

The similarities are there, but Hurts is in a much better position to succeed.

His last 2 games throwing have been pretty much the definition of that. However, our offense is much more like Auburn in terms of read option/power than Hurts just taking off.

If LSU can control the LOS without bringing the safety down it'll be big prohlems. If not, Alabama has too many weapons that Hurts can hit on easy throws to contain (in addition to Hurts/RBs).

So, as usual, it'll come down to the trenches.

The main parallel is inability to throw middle and long passes, which was Jefferson's issue.

Other than Hurts being a better runner with a stronger arm and a better leader, they are basically the same player. Hurts, though, won't come close to Jefferson in terms of the number of times each beat LSU.

You have to almost look at Alabama like a shotgun veer team right now with NFL skill guys and linemen.

They run variations of power, read option and QB runs and then fake off of that to Ridley, Howard and Stewart in the flats and in space. If you can't blow up the OL with 4 then it's going to incredibly difficult to defend.

Good thing we don't have any "big games" until the playoff starts

So far he's doing better running and passing the ball, than any single season for JJ.

He is already past the halfway point of JJ's career rushing yards of 1018 yards (521 yards on 1/4th of the carries).

Needs only 267 total yards to pass JJ's best year in 2009.

8 games.

Hurts is a better runner than JJ ever was. He also seems - even as a FR - to be much more composed than JJ was. Nothing really rattles the kid. Fumble on his first ever college snap? No problem. Sack, fumble, TD to go down 21 on the road in your first SEC game? No problem. Throw a pick and get down 14-13 against a top 10 team? No problem.

The kid is pretty special, but he will absolutely need to develop as a passer in order to get where he ultimately wants to go.

OP, you aren't completely off base. I do think Hurts is a better runner than JJ. I also think that Hurts has a better offense coaching staff that will put in better situations to be successful as well. Hurts may have a little better supporting cast on offense too although I don't recall exactly who else was on those LSU offenses.

One benefit of the doubt I will give Hurts with his passing is that he is a true freshman so he may improve. I think he will.

But I do agree that it is likely that in both the LSU and Auburn games Hurts is going to have to make a handful of key throws that he has been struggling with lately to win those games. He needs to improve passing the ball.

God I hope not. Honestly, I am more than a little concerned.

Didn't Jefferson beat Bama in 10?

Hurts plays for a competent coaching staff. They will find a way for him to make plays. It's a good comparison though. Looking back on Jefferson, he was a very talented QB who was a good runner with a great arm, but played in an awfully terrible offensive scheme.
