I think Saban is the reason Aubie has to roll the dice on an "up and coming" coach from a west school because nobody proven and elite wants to coach in the same state as Saban.

Historically, media and fans are awful at grading coaching hires. IMO the hot name, homerun hire, rarely turns out to be so. It’s not about how splashy the hire is, but about how well he fits the program, has a vision that he can execute, and can recruit/develop players for that system. There are really only 3 coaches currently I think are actual homerun can’t miss hires in the SEC west: Saban, Dabo, and Urban.

If you look at the coaching hire rankings almost any given year, the top rated hires fail more often than not. Let’s look at the 2016 coaching carousel just because it was the first year that popped up in my Google search. Top hires: Tom Herman at Texas and Willie Taggert at Oregon. Matt Rhule at Baylor was a solid B hire. Some of the meh to worst hires on the list: Luke Fickel at Cinci, Brent Brennan at San Jose State, Tom Allen at Indiana, and Jay Norvell at Nevada. All of those coaches ranked as some of the worst hires of 2016 and all had some of the best years in school history this year.

One of the reasons I was hesitant to fire Malzahn this year, was honestly because I did not care for almost any name thrown out as a big splash hire. I’m excited that we got somebody outside the box, with a proven record, that is young, ambitious and wants to take on a job in the toughest conference in America. The fact that nobody on this board seems to know him or think much of him makes me feel even better about the hire.

Maybe in three years.
Right now, you have to go to a lower tier (for the West school) and hope you can beat your rival regularly enough to placate a fan base. Or go to an upper tier west school and bank checks for three years to five years.

Exactly.

I would say both Georgia and LSU are better jobs than Alabama just based on their expectations and recruiting advantages.

LSU is attractive. Auburn should be but the insiders have too much control. Texas A&M is attractive. Ole Miss more than Mississippi State. I don’t know what to say about Arkansas.

A&M poached a top 3 coach from a power school. So yes, is the answer.

What you meant to say was A&M gave a coach that let his program come crashing down around him a golden parachute.

Les Miles and Ed Orgeron were able to win National Championships al LSU.

Given that, I’m sure it would be attractive to any decent coach available.

Especially given The AD’s tendency to grossly overpay (see Jimbo and Bo Pelini)

Moving forward after Saban, Alabama will be the least attractive job in the country. Saban set the bar way too high.

LSU has 3 national championships with 3 different coaches in the last 17 years. I would say that is pretty desirable.

They all are as long as they dont have toxic booster issues like Tenn and Auburn do.

Every football program in the conference is well funded and well televised. You succeed at a SEC school and you are made for your coaching career.

As much shite as I give LSU fans their program is absolutely attractive. Their state produces elite skill position players and they are next to a state large enough to provide almost everything else.
