I think most, if not all, of the pre-poll era championships were retroactive. In '25, '30, and '34, Bama was undefeated and won the Rose Bowl (they tied in '26)...several newspapers/sports writers of that time considered the winners of the Rose Bowl the mythical national champs...Bama has as much right as any of the teams in those years although others were worthy as well...
All "titles" awarded in 1925 were retroactive...but of the 12 awarded, 9 went to Bama, 2 to Dartmouth, and 1 to a one-loss team. More than one newspaper/media source was of the opinion that the Rose Bowl that year was for National Grid Title/Mythical National Championship.
Tennessee claims 1951...they played Maryland in their bowl and LOST. Is UT dropping their claim on this one?
Make up your mind, which is more important, pre-bowl ranking or post-bowl? The three teams you mention with better records that year all LOST their bowl game...and one of them, Nebraska, lost to Alabama...
Yes, Bama lost to USC that year...USC later lost to an unranked team. At the time of the bowl games, Bama was #2 in both polls. We beat #1 Penn State in the Sugar Bowl...we won the AP poll but lost the vote in the UPI...if anything we got screwed that year by the UPI. #2 beats #1 while #3 beats #5...and #3 becomes #1?

1925 National Championship- Alabama claims they share this one with Dartmouth. Who awarded the NC? Houlgate and Helms. Houlgate started his system in 1927. So Bama won their 1925 NC using a formula that didn’t exist until 1927? Helms Athletic Foundation started in 1941. Another incredible retroactive NC.

1964 National Championship- While the AP did award the NC to Bama (10-1-0), Arkansas had the better record, 11-0. Alabama played Texas in their bowl and LOST. The AP final poll was before the bowl.
