I thought Holden was a whiny little bitch

Yeah.. he was a kid, confused and lost.. I can see him coming across as whiny. I liked the way he looked at the world though, he saw the bs. I don't think many little bitches would have the balls to do a lot of the things he did.

I hated Old Man and the Sea the first time I read it in HS. Came to appreciate it much later. A Farewell to Arms is more up my alley (shocking I know).

For Whom the Bell Tolls > A Farewell to Arms > Green Hills of Africa > The Old Man & the Sea > The Sun Also Rises

I've never doubted the intellect of the IMers. It's the other 98%....

I get shite for not wanting to hang out with people from my hometown that didn't go to college after high school, but it really isn't because I'm stuck up or think I'm just better than those people. It's just hard to carry on conversation with them when I'm used to being at a university and in a fraternity and only dealing with people that are relatively intelligent and from decent backgrounds. I don't expect everyone to have the same background in history and literature that I do, but some people are ignorant to the point that the only conversation you can carry on with them is about things that are happening at that exact moment. It's frustrating as hell.

McCarthy? I liked the Road a little.

Yes. The Road is kind of a different book for him. Most of his stuff is set in Appalachia or the old West/Mexico. Blood Meridian is one of the best books I have ever read though.

You're god damned right.

FWIW I'm a big Jane Austen fan as well. Pride and Prejudice is one of my all-time favorites. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte as well.

I like Steinbeck personally. He gets overblown to a degree, but he was still a hell of a writer.

I see the BS in the world too. The difference between me and him is the fact that he wanted to annihilate the BS, and I use my knowledge of BS to advance myself.

I think I lean on the annihilation side.. unfortunately. Not easy way to live. Hating most everything isn't the best quality.

those are the worst. I stopped talking to one friend that couldn't text like a normal person and could only hold conversations about shitty weed, shitty rap music and stupid views on current issues.
