This is true. Like I said, I have a limited background knowledge on the subject. I researched serial killers pretty in depth for a paper once, but the psychology of that seems to be pretty different than that of people that do things like what happened today.
I say that to ask this-is there any way to predict people doing things like this? Or is it random to the point that it's nearly pointless to even try?

From my experience, there are kids I work with I can tell you will probably end up on the news or dead sooner rather then later. So some you can identify at a young age.
That said, there are a lot of people that you could never accurately diagnose doing something like what happened today. They may exhibit some markers for other psychological behaviors but as I said earlier it's not even remotely close to an exact science.
