So you'd find it pleasurable to sit around talking to a 1st class a-hole, huh.

Ty Cobb didn't suffer fools, but there was also a good bit of old school, Southern Gentleman in him.
He was a very smart guy...made his wealth out of sports. He was hated among fellow players because he was more intelligent, AND he'd cut your throat if he had to, to beat you!

had a beer at a bar next to Roger Clemens - it was meh but then again he wasn't talking loud trying to impress people, so that's good - ETA this was post-Piazza squabble

Had a beer with the Alabama Tide baseball radio crew, they were very cool dudes

Beer with Rob Evans, former Ole Miss bball coach, nice guy

Boog Powell at a Camden Yard bar, a beached whale happy to know that someone recognized him

Sat a table away from the entire New Orleans Saints football coaching staff at Metarie Hooters during the Ditka era, except I guess Ditka was the only one not there. Del Rio was there.

Paul Bear Bryant. From his childhood, to his playing days, to his coaching career, the games, the players...

...his former players seem to love him, so I imagine he'd be someone to listen to.

Gene Stallings and Pat Dye would be 2nd and 3rd choices.

I’d really have liked to have spent a week with Stabler in his prime

Had a brief chat in a bar with Charles Barkley about the 1984 SEC Tournament and another short chat a few years later. Very gracious guy. I wish both could’ve been longer conversations. He is definitely the correct answer in my mind.

There are legendary drinking stories about the Bear and "whoa lemme tell ya bout'" Keith Jackson in Birmingham when ABC came to town.

Unfortunately for me and others in pursuit of SEC related entertainment, instead of talking to one we have exposed ourselves to reading the writings of one.

I grew up in Tuscaloosa and was around Coach Bryant on numerous occasions through friend and family connections. He was a unique individual.
Coach Bryant had a drinking problem that required a chauffeur (I've forgotten his name), but he'd pull into Indian Hills C.C. on the way home(he lived close by) after his day was done. He'd walk through the ballroom to the bar there (about 15 yards or so) and sit down at a table that was basically "reserved" for him. When the bar tender saw him walk in, he'd pour him up a double scotch and by the time he sat down, it'd be on the table. Back then, the stock market was shown on a crawl across the tv screen, and he'd watch it while the bartender would go and fix him another double. After the 3rd double, he'd get up and walk outside to his car/chauffeur and go home.
Like any other highly driven individual, he had his demons, and had to live with them.

American Funds used to close out their due diligence meetings in L.A. with John Wooden doing his motivational pyramid speech.Sane one every time. Before he got too frail, he would stay for lunch after. I ended up at his table once. He was polite and all class. He probably wished he was anywhere else in the world, but he never showed it. A true GOAT.

I would have loved to have been able to spend some time with Coach Wooden. I doubt there's a classier, and better coach/man than him in ALL of sports!
