People bringing up Manziel are off the mark. He got a lot more press and notoriety that year, some of it his own self promotion. But he also had several big angles working in his favor:

(1) the first ever freshman to win. For decades seniority and career achievements factored heavily into the equation and that year the voters were determined to "make history" and prove that it was about the best player regardless of age.

(2) the freestyle dual threat. These QBs are ubiquitous now but it was much more uncommon before Manziel won. Tebow and Cam were lethal in the running game and won Heismans for it but those were mostly designed runs out of set formations to utilize their size and athleticism. Manziel's ability to scramble and make big plays out of nothing with his legs was more of a novelty in his time.

(3) a weak field. Monte Teo finished second the year Manziel won and Collin Klein finished third. And it gets even worse as you go down the list. Johnny was the only big story line that year.

(4) Texas AM went 11-2 and finished ranked #5 including a huge win on the road at #1 Alabama in which Manziel single handedly beat them.

Maybe that's because the CFP didn't exist then. LSU fans.

LSU is 7-3. Manziel, RG3, and Tebow all won the heisman on teams with 3 losses and worse stats than Daniels . I guess those guys were extremely lucky huh

Wrong, read the Heisman criteria before you misspeak.

Horrible take. LSU is not relevant to the CFP. It should go to one of those players.

It’s best player in CFB, not a team award

Speaking of “horrible takes”
