Also, the issue isn't with playing a tougher or weaker opponent, it was that the team who had earned the right to be in the game got left out for a more popular program

What fricking planet are y'all on? Who is this team that 'earned the right' to be in the game'?

Team A - won their conference, but lost to a 6-7 team
Team B - lost by 23 to a top 10 team, and didn't win their conference
Team C - lost by 3 to the #1 team, and didn't win their conference

What if Alabama loses in OT on a questionable call to OSU, after crushing Wash. and OSU barely gets by Clemson, they will both have one loss and Alabama's will be better so will the committee give them the championship.

Team A won their conference and had more quality wins but Bama fans love the "best loss" argument in this discussion for obvious reasons

I think the job of the committee is to get the 4 best/most deserving teams in, and they did that. If PSU only had 1 loss instead of 2 they'd have been in over OSU.

I only somewhat disagree. If the names had been reversed, I am will to bet Ohio State would have gotten in over Penn State and the winning the conference would have held more sway.

Big brands like Ohio State will alway get the benefit of the doubt over other teams.

That said, if situation was reversed and OSU was a two loss B1G champion with H2H win over a 1 loss PSU and they got left out, you'd never hear the end of it from their fans.

And that is one part of why I think the decision would have gone the other way had the positions been reversed.

Again, it is kind of a moot point for this year. But the Ohio State call this year is going to lead to some headaches if they get blown out by Clemson. And the same might happen when Alabama blows out Washington.

Bro. 1 rematch isn't that big of a number. It's the first one when counting. One... examples may include...

It's 1 more than the # of touchdowns LSU scored versus Bama in 8 quarters that year.

It's 1 more than total points versus Bama this year.

Crazy but it's also 1 more than the number of trips a "once in a generation" RB (LF7) got to take to NYC for the Heisman.

Conference championships are a one game shot. Upsets happen.

No way in fk LSU was better than Tennessee in 2001. They won the game and were declared the SECs best even though Tennessee and florida had better conference records and BOTH had beaten LSU convincingly earlier.

Same with regular season. Marcus spears said it best. Every squirrel finds a nut every now and then. Doesn't mean u are the best. That's why pro sports play a series of games. U have to be good over the long haul and not just have one good day.

People seem to associate winning championship with being the best team as though they are the exact same thing, which they are not.

There is definitely a strong correlation, the best way to win a championship is to be the best team and very frequently the best team does win the championship.

However the team that wins the championship isn't necessarily the best team.

It's been true in every sport for all of history.

Being the best team gives you the best chance at winning the championship, but no guarantee.

History is full of flukey champions who got hot at the right time or caught a ton of luck.

You know how Big named teams have more fans, which means higher percentage of fans are assholes, but not even most, but a vocal strong minority of the fans, maybe. Like Bama? That's how Ohio State fans are. Some of them are cool as shite, some of them are, meh, and some are straight up @ssholes. It happens when there are 20 million plus.

I think it was more about the name Ohio State tbh.

If it had been, say, Purdue or Northwestern we would not be having this conversation.

And it is not so much about the fans, but the potential revenue and excitement generated.

Again, I can live with the choice of Ohio State and Washington, but I still think it was the legacy of Ohio State that pretty much assured they were in even if the situation had been reversed.

But the system will always have room for debate. And I think the committee tried to split the difference with conference champs and OOC schedule by including Washington with Ohio State. I wonder what people will say though if Alabama absolutely shellacks Washington.
