Cupcake schools are good bidness. Helps keep Alabama one of the most profitable programs around.
Gets you an bonus home game without having to turn around and go to their school the next year. The benefit to the cupcake is they get a "fat" payday and some national press.
Gives you a chance to rest up for tougher SEC opponents and get some playing time for reserves.
The cupcake collects their check and hopes they don't lose too many players to injury.
Once in a great while, the cupcake actually wins--Appalachian State comes to mind. Not often, but often enough to keep hope alive.
I don't like the system fwiw....but AD's don't ask me.

Spin it any way you want. Playing a FCS school is stupid. Playing two is

For the most part, I like Saban's scheduling philosophy. With a little tweaking here and there it would be very good. OOC is the only thing they control, so that's really the only thing you can hold them accountable for. Scheduling USC, OSU, etc is not as simple as picking up the phone. Bama has been turned down by a few big programs recently from what I understand. OSU just cancelled four games with the SEC.
-Since Saban arrived Bama has played, FSU, Mich, VT twice, CLemson, PSU twice, and have a home and home with MSU soon. I think those games are great, would prefer to get some more top 7-8 type programs like Mich. but it takes two to deal.
- I think the whole FCS stuff is overblown. Everyone schedules cupcakes, that's just fact. Whether a team has FBS or FCS by it's name means nothing on the field, either will still get whipped. North Texas or GA Southern, APP ST or Idaho, no difference in any of those teams. All are cupcakes and easy money, regardless of designation.
My ideal schedule.
- 8 conference games
- 1 big name program or hot team
- 1 low level BCS team(like when Bama played Duke)
- 2 cupcakes
- SECCG and BCSCG will be a nice finish.

I fricking hate these games against FCS schools. An absolute waste of schedule space. I wouldn't mind so much if Alabama at least played a decent conference USA or Big East school, but these games against community colleges are annoying as frick.

Alabama A&M, New Mexico St. & ULM say "Hey".

I think our out of conference is ok. Recently we've played Clemson, VT, Penn State, and Michigan. They were ranked or Top 10. Not our fault they ended up not being as good as advertised. And we got VT next year and Michigan State soon.
But it's our SEC schedule next I'm not crazy about. I'd much rather have UGA, USCe, or Florida rather than Kentucky. Sure it is a win...But it won't be entertaining. We are being robbed of very good football by dropping UGA. Sure LSU fans use this just for yet another reason to piss and moan, but I wish uga was still on the schedule.

That's just the way the schedule lines up. We had 6 of 8 of our SEC opponents having an off week before they played us two years ago. I sure didn't think that was fair. It all evens out over time. We should be better next year. Going for a 3rd straight Natty?

Hey, maybe he's a poster on here too and made the schedule that way because he knew y'all would bitch.

As a season ticket holder who drives 6 hours round trip every week to see the game, its a waste of time. Though most cupcake games are the same, unless your Auburn 2012, The FCS are just a ride down there and a ride back.

Hopefully we win it this year because we should contend next year.
Can you imagine the nuclear meltdown from LSU fans if we win 4 out of the last 5?

Spinning it just like your and every other AD spins it.
Not saying I like it. I don't.
Want to change it? Stop going to games...no concessions, no parking, no full hotels and restaurants...that's about the only way to get the attention of money-savvy AD's.

UGA's schedule next year pretty much reflects your ideal. OOC games vs Clemson and GA Tech, along with a couple of cupcakes (North Texas (FBS) and Appalachian State (FCS).
Looks like our FCS cupcake may be tougher than the FBS cupcake.

It may be a easy schedule to the NC, but that shite gets boring. We had so many cupcakes this year compared to last, I was so ready to get to the meat of our schedule. Hard to get up for Towson. 2011 was fun as shite, not just because we were winning, it was fun playing big teams every week like WV and Oregon.

Yeah, after Michigan I didn't get genuinely excited for a Bama game until they played LSU....... Two months later...
