What made it special is slowly disappearing with bowl games becoming null, players opting out left and right etc

All that and with there being only a handful of teams even capable of making the playoffs (and the same ones year after year) I think interest is going to drop off substantially

Tell that to LSU fans all over about once in a while chance to win it all! No fun to be the odd one out every year!

I remember watching I believe Arizona play Boise in the Fiesta Bowl the first year of the playoff and no one gave a shite. I was astounded as that was always an incredible game during the BCS but nope, just another meaningless endeavor I guess.

Wonder if this is a popular opinion?

It already is. I used to live for College football Saturdays. Now it's hard to care. I still watch for entertainment, but it's getting real hard to care when you can pretty much name the playoff bracket 3 months before the season kicks off.

This sport is fundamentally broken.

What has hurt college football more than anything is all the rules set to benefit the offense. The defense is leaving the game more and more year after year. College football has become the arena league more and more. The only difference is most games are played outside and the field is 100 yards. The defense and ST have just about been removed totally from the game.

This.

Preseason rankings become circular self fulfilling prophecies as well.

Then making the playoffs leads to better recruiting, which then leads to those teams continuing to be the best/highly ranked.

I want to see the sport grow, not become even more regional and slowly die

You’re going to start seeing players quitting midway through the season. Some universities just throwing their hands up knowing they have no chance. It’s only going to get worse unless something is done, which it won’t be because the TV money is still there...for now

Well if you will remember there was a lot of talk about Fournette taking off his Sr season to protect himself from injuries. So it has been talked about before already.

Agreed. Either the playoffs have to expand, or they have to be done away with and back to a BCS type of system. The P12 is a shell of itself, the BDF is Oklahoma and the dwarves, the ACC is Clemson and the dwarves, and the only competitive leagues are the B1G and SEC

With the current system, Alabama, tOSU, and Clemson have pretty much a vice grip on three of the four positions every year. That is also shown in the recruiting rankings and media bias ...

This year ND, A&M, Cincinnati, and Coastal all had better arguments than tOSU. But the media has such a strong influence on the selection process, and "names" will get some viewership. But NOBODY outside of Alabama and Clemson wants yet another final game between the two. And that is what will happen yet again

WTF?? - no it is not.
Naive fricking Bama fan.

What has hurt college football is how everyone plainly sees the rigged business it has become. When 90% of teams have no chance at even winning their conference much less winning anything bigger... while front-runner programs can blatantly flaunt NCAA rules with no semblance of penalty then why pay the time and money every year?

Look around at the rest of the college football community and get a clue.

Let’s play devils advocate. Players continue to opt out, bowl games start to get shitty ratings, and less dollars from advertisers as a result. That leads us to an expanded playoff....which is what everyone should want.

Put me in the category that thinks players opting out is ultimately a good thing for the sport. frick bowl games, other than gambling they’re pointless.

You may need to get a clue. Every team has a shot at winning the league they play in. Vandy or Wake Forest or Kansas has the same shot at winning the Conference they play in as Bama, Clemson, or Oklahoma. The little guy can recruit the same players as the big schools. The reason that only 85 scholarships can be given to players is to level the playing field. I know some cheat but cheating goes on no matter the size of the school. Big schools and little schools do it. It’s been going on forever. So you might need the clue. I’m talking about keeping the game of college football as close to football as we can get it where all 3 phases of the game matter. There is so many 40, 50, and even 60 point games now that college football is becoming some kind of novelty and sooner or later college football will stop drawing viewers because the defensive side of the ball is being taken out of the game like they already have done with the ST.

I wouldn’t worry about college football. People will still watch more than many other sports. And I certainly wouldn’t judge anything off this year.

Did you just say Kansas or Vandy has an equal chance to win their league as Oklahoma or Alabama?

Yes. They have the same chance to recruit the same players as Alabama, Oklahoma or any other school. Alabama gets no special type of athletic scholarship to hand out than Vandy does. If players choose not to got to Vandy then that’s on Vandy. Same for Kansas or any other school that struggles to win in football. If Vandy wants to have higher academic standards than the rest of the SEC then that is Vandys choice. Same for any other school. But all these bottom dwelling schools have access to the same players as the schools that win a lot. What is so hard about comprehending and grasping that point. If you wanna win in college football then you have to be willing to pay good money for a great coach and recruit top players out of high school. It ain’t rocket science to understand.

The playoffs have broken the formula. A lot of people, including those who came up with the BCS, knew they would. What made cfb special is that every game mattered and a lot of what made it fun was the controversy. CFB will never be fair and the playoffs only heighten that.
