No, if we beat Auburn and lose the SEC championship game we are not guaranteed a spot in the playoff. As far as the committee dropped us after the OU loss spoke volumes. That was a massive drop just for losing to the 11th ranked team in the country by two points.

Beat da barn they prolly in with a good game in SECCG vs aTm... I'd rather they flame out so UGA didn't have to play them in playoffs ( Kirby's poison)

No 3 loss team should ever be in a playoff. Ever.

Many people said that about a 2-loss team in the BCS era…
But circumstances must be considered.
In 2007 2-loss LSU was picked against 1-loss Ohio State for the natty. Many forget there were only 2 other teams with less losses than LSU at the selection time. Kansas was 11-1, but they didn’t make their conference championship game and were 1-1 against ranked teams (6-pt win over KSU and 8-pt loss to Mizzou). Hawaii was 12-0 and 1-0 vs ranked teams (12-pt win at home over #19 Boise State).
LSU was 10-2 (triple OT losses to #17 UK and to unranked Arkansas); they were 6-1 against ranked teams (including 2 Top Ten teams).
Did the BCS Committee get the selection right?
LSU beat OSU by 14 in the natty.
Kansas won the Orange Bowl by 3 over VaTech (a team LSU had beaten by 41).
Hawaii lost the Sugar Bowl by 31 to Georgia.
Soooo, I disagree with the NEVER.

NEVER and I stand by that. Unless of course they win the Conference they play in, but winning the Conference has to actually mean something and it certainly doesnt now.

I don't really remember there being the same uproar in 1996 when Florida got a rematch with Florida State after losing to them in the last regular season game of the year.

The 1996 situation was different for two reasons:
1) Florida had won the SECCG in between the games, thus earning their way into the Sugar Bowl via the SEC tie-in.
2) FSU was picked for the Sugar Bowl opponent because they could not play the pre-bowl #2 Arizona State due to the Big10/Pac10 Rose Bowl tie-ins.

If the 2011 rules applied in 1996, it's most likely that Florida State would have played Arizona State for the national title. Only with Arizona State losing to Ohio State earlier in the day did the Sugar Bowl become a de-facto national championship game.

I do agree that the rematch in 2011 blew up college football as we knew it. I also think that was intentional, as ESPN already held the television rights to the BCSCG (taken over from FOX) and would greatly benefit from having a playoff contract.

The evidence I have for that is how during the Oklahoma State/Oklahoma game, they were already touting the BCSNCG game matchup between Alabama and LSU. In other words, they were saying to their viewers, "Pay no attention to this beatdown of #10 by the team the computers say should be the #2 team, we've already decided to give you another heaping helping of field goals (even though one of those teams isn't playing today)."

There's a lot of factors going on here: Bama's advantage in the Helmet Test (which translates to viewers), the whole question of whether Bama was the better team in the previous game, Okie State not being Oklahoma, etc. But, I firmly believe there were people at ESPN who were working to influence the voters to put in Bama in an attempt to push the playoff cause further.

Oh well, if we played Okie State and didn't play better that night, we would have lost to them too.
