It’s like being in purgatory I guess.

It could be worse — a lot worse (see recent hires at Florida, Florida State, Auburn, Arkansas, Oklahoma, USC, Michigan, etc.)

It’s kinda of like hiring a better James Franklin. You’re gong to win a lot of games. You’ll lose a few, but it’s unlikely you’ll have disastrous seasons (see Florida, FSU, Auburn). You just have to hope all the stars align for that perfect year, otherwise you’re having a lot of 9,
10 win seasons.

Simply put, it could be so, so much worse.

That's great and all, the problem is you had the exact same record WITH all of those players. Hence, the Brian Kelly patented ceiling.

Did you not read about the defense? Yes, we had 3 DL go to the draft... we also didn't have a DL coach. Lost just before the season started to crazy 1 in a million health issue. And it turned out the rest of the staff couldn't pick up the slack, and by doing so they in turn neglected their own position groups (which still weren't as talented as you want yet). So we had an abysmal defense, and still went 9-3.

That's now addressed, we have new guys who seem to be putting in a good scheme, but need the talent (linebackers and secondary) to really make it great. The defensive line, expected to be the weakest link, has played well.

I'll say it again- I'm ok with where we're at. Kelly was not coming in to bump a good program up like Kirby did at UGA, despite what some unrealistic fans might think. He was brought in to rebuild the program from basically the ground up, so that it lasts. We don't need to have 1 great run and then be 6-6 again, we need to set the basement high, and build from there. That takes time.

Is it worth 10 million dollar a year HC and some top pay for assistants for this? It would be better to get someone young and upcoming who have proven to build other programs and succeed.

And people forget LSU's past hires

Kelly will never win a national title, they say.
He played for 1 at Notre Dame.

Les Miles was a mediocre coach at Oklahoma State, I'd say Gundy has surpassed him there. At LSU, he won 1 title and played for another.

Ed Orgeron was fricking awful at Ole Miss. He won a title at LSU, mostly still riding the remnants of Miles' program structure.

If you had to choose between Kelly, Miles and Orgeron as your head coach, who would you pick?

I would be embarrassed to see my coach complaining to the refs about the defense blitzing while my team was trying to score.

That was one of the most pathetic things I’ve seen from a coach. “Are you going to ALLOW them to keep playing while we try to score?!”

I don't like Coach Kelly and his faaaamulllllleeee. But, I'd take him over the retard we are currently stuck with

Maybe you should wait for Indiana HC to get the call from Florida AD.

If a fan is satisfied with winning 9-10 games per year and never winning a national title then he's a very solid hire. But he's not a NC type of coach. He reaches his ceiling relatively fast and doesn't go any higher. That's what LSU hired.

That is not what most LSU fans were saying. They were saying he will win a championship at LSU.

I'd say yes... when the alternative is pay somebody 6-7 mil a year and not sniff 9 wins.

Napier?
Harsin?

You can't just pluck a guy from a mid-major and drop him at an LSU, and expect he will automatically succeed. Or even handle the pressure.
Look at this year... look at the preseason predictions ON THE RANT. Lots of 8-4, some 9-3. Most people, while sober and looking at who left, who was returning, and who was coming in, thought this team would take a step back.
These same people are now losing their minds because ... LSU is playing to expectations, perhaps a bit better on the D Line and a bit worse with the running game. We knew we had no secondary, we knew we had serious questions at LB. Nobody in their right mind EXPECTED this team to be a title contender, even if they wanted them to be.
And now they want to fire Kelly because... it's what we thought it would be.

Kelly can handle that, I figure guys like Deboer etc can too. A lot of guys might collapse.

This is when LSU fans, the ones still watching the game, realized Brian Kelly might not be suited for the SEC.

Brian Kelly’s best season at LSU may end up being the one with those 39 Ed Orgeron players. They still had some dog in them on defense.

How about Kansas HC? Indiana HC? There are plenty more to go around. Your AD was lazy and just went with the same route that he did hiring Jimbo Fisher. Similar pay and a 10 year contract and now it is starting to look like a bad deal for LSU. Alabama went with Washington HC. LSU need to first focus on getting an AD to do a better job.

I think a lot of us thought he'd be what he's always been and so far that's proved out.

Maybe a little worse but I attribute that to a harder SEC.

I'd be worried he'd be a consistent 9-11 win coach that wouldn't bring home the hardware. Is that better than having a 5-7 coach? Hard to say. It's easier to fire the 5-7 coach (in theory)

Yeah, but LSU "stole" their current AD to do a better job.

They're very proud of his accomplishments in women's sports: basketball and baseball.

We can go round and round with this, and it's clear neither of us will change our approach

Yes, there were a lot of guys LSU could have hired. Most of them aren't going 9-3 out of the gate with the dumpster fire LSU had become, so we wouldn't be having this discussion. Either we'd be grateful for now having a shot at 9-3 and potentially a trip to Atlanta (however remote), or we'd be seriously exploring who the next guy is going to be.

Kelly isn't Jimbo, LSU doesn't seem to have the locker room cancers Jimbo had. He isn't talking shite in the preseason with Saban and Kiffin the way Jimbo did, and not back it up.

Alabama- the premier program in the nation, with talent at worst top 3 (behind maybe UGA, very slim chance of Ohio State)- was able to hire a NC contender from Washington, which is now rebuilding? Shocker. Kiffin would have them at the same spot I think.
We're not Alabama.

Yeah, Woodward's awful. He hired a baseball coach who's won a national title, a women's basketball coach who's won a national title, promoted the women's gymnastics coach who won a national title, and hired a football coach who's gone 9-3 both of his complete seasons, and is looking at 9-3 again.
What a shmuck.
