How is the leading basketball scorer all time at UK is a woman?

Who only played 3 years?

Who played at least 40 years ago?

Sometimes you just accept the hand of God dropping down and elevating a shooty hoops player.

Stalling Strategy: Temple held the ball for extended periods, effectively running down the clock, and Tennessee didn't come out of its zone.

The guy was a generational talent.

He definitely was, but the amount of hours he put in working with a basketball in his hands was absolutely insane. Obsessed doesn't quite cover it.

He also filled arenas wherever he played

He also made basketball a real sport in Louisiana and the rest of the South

He also died very young because he had an abnormal heart

With a HEART like his,

He should have never accomplished what he did

He also faced extreme racism in the NBA from his own teamates

Ended his career playing for the Celtics
Retired
And the next season the Celtics won the Championship

Tragedy followed him

At LSU, there were freshman teams at the time

He would fill the “cow palace”

Fans would leave after and not stay for the varsity team

I could go on and on

He was without a doubt

The greatest college basketball player to ever play

Anybody that tries to disparage his accomplishments is at best incredibly ignorant

At worse, I can’t think of the words

But I’ll start with POS, douche, scumbag

He was a generation talent, if not a multi-generational talent. He scored so much because his dad made him the offense, but he was an all-around player. He could pass and rebound and had a high basketball IQ too.

I saw him three times, and every time he came to Auburn to play, the place was sold out. Auburn v. LSU was the first Auburn game in the new Coliseum, and tickets were hard to come by. He really put on a show.

Auburn had a guy back then who could shoot too, and once scored 60 on bama. When Maravich scored 60 in the Coliseum that night, he scored 48 (Auburn won). John Mengelt went on to play several years in the NBA and would be much better known had he not been the same age as Pistol Pete.

that's not bad for a jump shooter. Kobe's career FG% was also sub 45%

He sat next to me both times he went to accounting class. I saw every home game. He was phenomenal. When he was a freshman, they were ineligible for varsity. The home crowd would leave after the freshman game, which shows how bad our teams were. He WAS the team, and any chance at victory, depended on Pete. The other teams just had to defend him. There were assist missed because his teammates were not always ready for his passes. Others have mentioned the lack of the three point shot, but many of his shots would have been 3’s because the defenses doubled to shut off his drives. He was special.

Went to the Jazz games

Unbelievable

So many stories

At the Loyola Field house
Playing against Cleveland with Austin Carr guarding him at the end of the game

Pistol crossed mid court and put on “show time”

A term the Lakers stole from him

As the clock was running out Carr could not stop the Pistol

With 2-3 seconds left

Pistol stopped and handed the ball to Carr

He stood there shocked as the time ran out

Now recall the other two seasons besides his last one where LSU basketball finished around .500 with a losing bottom 1/3rd SEC overall SEC finish. Talk about how those teams would have also gotten into the tournament today.

LSU basketball was like an 8th or 9th place SEC basketball program every single year of the Press Maravich era besides that one lone year they snagged a 4th place NIT trophy. All you have to do is look back at the results of those basketball seasons under Maravich.

If yall think you hate your basketball coach now you guys would really DETEST the on court results of a Press’s basketball program in today’s era.

Im reading fringe reasons for his insane numbers. Im sticking with unfathomable to the human mind. I think he holds the record at coleman colisuem with like 68 or some shite

And LSU lost that game. LSU lost a LOT of games with Pistol. A team could let Pistol get his points, shut down everyone else, and win. He averaged 44 points per game in college. But he was only a career 43.7% shooter. The volume of shoots he took is astounding. He averaged 22 makes a game on 50 attempts. He averaged 50 attempts per game over his 4 year college career. 50 ATTEMPTS PER GAME.

That is how he scored so many points.

Last night Mark Sears and Aden Holloway shot a LOT. They combined for 32 attempts between them (Sears 18 and Holloway 14). Pistol averaged 50. Several seasons he attempted more shots than the rest of the team combined.

LSU went a combined 52-58 over his 4 year career.
