The OP wanted to talk about endowments. Think about the amount of money in the US under management by what are supposed to be institutions of education.
In an $18 trillion economy, I don't think universities maintaining a cushion and using the interest to help keep the place running is a particularly big deal. And these institutions do, in fact, provide an education. Hell, until about 20 years ago, they provided access to resources normally only available to people in convenient range of three or four of the largest libraries in the country. And asking the librarian for the best texts to study a specialized field was never going to be half as effective as asking a professor in the same field.
Even now, the average person goes to wikipaedia to learn stuff that was written by people who studied the subject and wanted to disseminate the information. Or to make up egregious lies. Whichever floated their boat.

With our endowment, why can't we hire a good coach? Lots of buyout money there.
Endowments are restricted to just academics.

Don't know how endowments relate to college experiences, but I'd still matriculate at UGA knowing what I know about each school.

I'd honestly like to see how much these endowments have changed in the last decade. Bama at 3 honestly surprised me. We're beating Walmart, Tyson, and Jerry money. I figured y'all would be fourth after Florida.

Berea College has a billion dollar endowment and tuition is free.
This is how it should work yet 99.9999% of colleges in the USA do not work this way.

I'm guessing I am endowed 3" more than 95% of the SEC.

Disclosure isn't mandated by law. That doesn't mean numbers can't be voluntarily disclosed.

No one is going around forcing private citizens to whip out their dicks and measure them. But if yours is big you might just volunteer anyway

When you're right, you're right. But try telling that to the people at the DMV when I was renewing my license.

Nobody is impressed with the Shanghai Electrical College's endowment.

Normally I'd say this is an off-season thread, but since our season is over, I'll allow it.

I just took a quick look at that document.
1) It counting the entire University of Alabama System
2) Your counting a lot of stuff that isn't normally included in a university's endowment calculations.
3) In the Document you linked it says
quote:
The University’s endowments experienced a decrease
of $56.0 million in fiscal 2013 with a September 30
value of $617.6 million.
quote:
The University of Alabama System's financial endowment was valued at $1.2 billion in the National Association of College and University Business Officers' 2015 listings, up 0.1% from its 2014 value. UA's portion of the system's endowment was valued at $659 million in September 2015

My understanding is Alabama's system is split between
Birmingham (where they have top flight medical) so a big chunk of the endowment
Huntsville (think of them as Georgia Tech)
Tuscaloosa (think of them as UGA)

endowments.com Top 500
I assume this is your source
This website has a lot of inconsistencies.
Also, the Texas A&M's system endowment is actually undervalued here. Its actually 10 billion dollar. However, Aggies know thier endowment is total bullshite. The state of Texas is directly funding it through its Permanent University Fund.
Absolute bullshite Aggies
This is the proper order
1. Texas A&M: $10,477,102 (With government assistance)
2. Vanderbilt: $4,133,542
3. Florida: $1,555,703
4. Texas A&M: $1,387,623 (Without government assistance)
5 Tennessee: $1,106,924
6. Kentucky: $1,142,722
7. Georgia: $1,004,987
8. Arkansas: $948,679
9. Missouri: $852,300
10. LSU: $851,833
11. Alabama: $659,000
12. Auburn: $641,993
13. South Carolina: $625,186
14. Ole Miss: $606,387
15. Mississippi State: $449,106
This list excludes university systems and I removed the last 3 zeros to make it easier to read.
Note*
The Texas A&M system makes no distinction between College Station and the other universities under the same name. They all share the same endowment fund.

quote:
Understanding PUF: What is the Permanent University Fund?
First, the Texas Constitution stipulates that Texas A&M gets one-third of the benefits of the PUF and the University of Texas gets two-thirds. The PUF consists of two pieces – the 2.1 million acres of land that are dedicated to it, and the return on investment of the revenue produced on those lands. The revenue that gets the most attention, understandably, comes from the production of oil and gas. Tracts of land are leased to oil companies that pay royalties on whatever oil they produce.
The Texas Constitution stipulates that this money flow directly into the PUF, which functions as a permanent endowment. This endowment is managed by a 501(c)(3) corporation, the University of Texas Investment Management Company (UTIMCO), under the authority of the UT System Board of Regents.
The Permanent University Fund Lands also generate a smaller but significant amount of “surface” revenue by leasing tracts for grazing, hunting, wind farms and other purposes such as easements for pipelines and electricity distribution lines. Unlike the oil and gas revenue, this money goes straight into the Available University Fund (AUF). I’ll discuss the difference between PUF and AUF in a moment.

Wrong. There are no inconsistencies on this site that you're aware of. But, of course you know that, which is why you gave no examples.
Perhaps you should add back in the last 3 zeros, and throw in an extra couple hundred thousand if you like. It's just a different shade of the same situation. Everyone knows this is a moving target. But, I think you deep down you understand.
