Ole Miss isn't used to high expectations, so this is uncharted territory for them. They were picked last in the West last year. It's hard to predict how the players will handle it.
How often has Nutt had Top 5-10 preseason rankings at Arky? He usually did more with less during his tenure there.

You can't base what he did at Arky on what he will and has already done at Ole Miss. He can recruit a lot better here than he did in Arkansas.
And you base that on what? Arkansas has a larger athletic budget, more big donors, and FAR superior facilities, and he wasn't even able to put a fence around that state.

I've heard credible people say Arkansas is a tough state to recruit in.

Signed,
Houston Nutt.

Pretty much - Arkansas isn't exactly a hotbed for high school football talent.

It's thin compared to states like Louisiana and Texas, but when it did produce blue chip recruits, Nutt could not keep them in-state.
During his time there, LSU nabbed two highly touted players- Matt Stoltz and Brett Helms- right from under his nose. Nutt could not sign Mitch Mustain, Damian Williams, and the rest of Springdale bunch without the university taking drastic action to force him to hire Malzahn. He couldn't get Kodi Burns (in-state), or Ryan Mallett (from the Texas side of Texarkana, but grew up a Hog fan).
The fact that some of these guys didn't pan out notwithstanding, the point is that he generally cannot sign players who are pursued by elite programs, even in-state. He's a horrendous recruiter.

He also lost Lee Ziemba to Auburn and Brett Williams to Tennessee.

Also, missed out on Deangelo Williams.

To be fair, he signed with Memphis. I doubt the elite programs were banging his door down.

If he's a horrendous recruiter at #18 in the country....what does that make Petrino at #16?

They can't even respond to it.

It means he signed 32 players and Petrino signed less. Check back in three years when Ole Miss' roster reaches 2004 Cutcliffe levels.

He's a freaking genius, then. It's a shame he couldn't pull down these marginal recruits. Maybe he watched film on them.

IMO, Ole Miss fans better enjoy the next year or two because the Nutt suckage will rear it's head again in Oxford after Orgeron's recruits start thinning out.
And watch out for those offseason job openings...Nutt'll get his name in the mix. Right, pigs?

To be fair, we did sign 30...

Only the top 20 players in the class count towards the ranking.

Oh God, anything but that. His classes were abortions.

The fact that the rankings typically only count the top 25 recruits evidently gets thrown out of the argument.

he over signed period. He went after 3 and 4 star players even if they had a .50 gpa and escaped from prison -- not all will make the class and he knew it. Just padding numbers so he could break the top 30 in recruiting for the first and and take advantage of all those haters. It is funny though he has worked harder than he ever has at the University of Arkansas. I guess he is out to prove that he is a great coach.
