That same situation occurs every day in MLB and every time, without fail, the third baseman foregoes the tag and makes the throw to first. Why? It's more routine. Too much can happen when you make an abnormal step to try and tag a runner.
Kid made the right decision on the throw. I think the initial indecision, paired with the heaviness of the situation, caused the bad throw. If he just catches and throws, he probably makes a good throw and Auburn is in the winner's bracket.
This is baseball and shite happens.
That throw is 90% muscle memory, and the fact that he had to deviate from the norm cost him the out.

He just thought that State would score more than one run through 8 innings. After that, he realized he had to do something.
