We shall see. Bottom line is Saban is a good coach. Did he get the ball rolling here? Yes, but everyone knows that the beast that is LSU football has been a long time coming with the amazing talent that comes out of the state year in and year out. Can he do the same thing at Bama? I don't think so because there is not as much talent and he has to share the talent he does have with Auburn. On the other hand we have finished 5, 3, and 1 in Miles' three years here and have recruited just as good or better on average than Saban did. I like our chances in the years to come, but I do think Bama will be a much more consistent program.

no it isn't and that isn't true. okay for instance my friend from rummel (local boy craig steltz).. he was a stand out db for our hs football team and would of came to LSU without any hesitation. his brother (kevin steltz a former LSU fullback who had to WALK ON the team basically by outbenching everyone else) actually talked coaches into really giving him a look. louisiana doesn't have any big time schools in state to compete with..
louisiana hs football talent from 1998-2004 was absolutely incredible including what 2 national championships??

i admit i do like what saban did outside LA in 2003's recruiting class.. but what Les Miles is currently doing with his recruiting outside the state is even more impressive.
Posted on 9/4/08 at 6:38 am to beauchristopher
To answer your question directly, LSU Football could not have been any worse than Bamas since the 1992 title by Stallings.
As far as hiring Saban, the typical committe that hired coaches at LSU did not have input, Saban was unknown and hired by his best friend Mark Emmit who now is at Washington. I do recall the fan base grumbling because we dominated MSU and Saban the year before in the Indy Bowl and did not feel he would get the job done. Sure you could say CNS won a championship at LSU, but he did not do it alone, he had a pretty good staff, (the best money could buy) that took time to develop.

Read a book that CS wrote a few years after he was hired by LSU....Bring Back the Glory or something like that and the book states that someone called in a favor and asked LSU to interview him for the job. He wanted the job and had to ask to be interviewed....no one here knew of CS at the time. He stated in the book how Michigan State had played LSU in Shreveport at the bowl game and he was so impressed with how the fans and band interacted together he said he thought "that must be an awsome place to coach". Well he got the interview and the rest in history.

Where do you think your program would be today if you guys would not have hired Saban in 2000 ?
The crystal ball is not working.

Where would Bama be without the "Bear"?
If you don't know why LSU fans are so upset with Saban, then you have been completely ignoring the facts.
Posted on 9/4/08 at 8:43 am to mobilelsu
Where would Slick Nick be without LSU? His resume does not look so good with just Michigan State and Miami on it.
The coach at Iowa was just as highly thought of as Nick Saban. Look how his career has turned out.
Nick Saban needed LSU just as badly as we needed him to get us over the hump.
But there are very good reasons LSU fans hate him.
He tends to do that to the fans of places he has been. Go talk to Michigan State and Miami about that.

no it isn't and that isn't true. okay for instance my friend from rummel (local boy craig steltz).. he was a stand out db for our hs football team and would of came to LSU without any hesitation. his brother (kevin steltz a former LSU fullback who had to WALK ON the team basically by outbenching everyone else) actually talked coaches into really giving him a look. louisiana doesn't have any big time schools in state to compete with..
I guess sarcasm doesn't travel to the message board well without a smiley face. I'm a bit shocked a few people took that seriously.

The REAL question is would Saban be who he is today if LSU had not hired him?
Posted on 9/4/08 at 9:01 am to Steven4bama
Ask the Miami Dolphins the same question. Or Michigan State.
It really is a stupid question. What if we'd hired Spurrier before he went to Florida?

ONE year ? Convenient how you completely blow off that disaster of his coaching in Miami.

I don't hate Saban, I mean I hate him like I hate the coach of a rival school. I appreciate what he did here, but he's a rival now...
Saban was obviously the right man for the job in 2000, but Saban was not the only person who could have come in and put LSU on the map. LSU was going through changes at the time of Saban's hiring. Our new chancellor at the time, Mark Emmert, was willing to put forth the $$$$$ for a top notch football program. If he didn't get Saban, I am confident Emmert would have found someone who would have put LSU on the map. Yes, I am giving just as much credit to Emmert as I am to Saban for improving LSU football.
