What they other guy said wasn't precisely accurate.
Ever since his dad was young, he'd joked that if he had a son, he'd name him "Bumper".
When Bumper was born, his mom wouldn't let him be named that so they gave him some boring name. But everyone called him Bumper anyway. So he legally changed it when he could.
So not his birth name, but more than a nickname.
