There's pass heavy offenses and then there's what he runs. For instance, LSU was thought of to be "pass heavy" but still ran the ball on 47% of their plays this season. Excluding the 20 sacks WSU allowed, they ran the ball 190 times on the season out of 920 total plays run. That's a run rate of 20.65%. He may upset a team here and there but his teams are not going to do a lot with his style of play in this conference. I know everyone loves the hire but they love the hire because of his personality. State could have done worse obviously, but I tend to agree this isn't going to produce the results people think it will.

leach refuses to the run the football. and he doesn't seem to have time to run a defense.

he has his upsides, and it should make for exciting football - he can win 6 games a year for sure. but contend? that's a stretch.

Isn't that the idea if you're MSU?

Win your cupcake non-conference games, beat the conference bottom dweller (Arkansas/Vandy/etc), win a couple games against teams you match up closely with (A&M, OM, UK, etc.), and maybe upset a big boy.

Boom. 8 wins. State fans are happy.

He won't win 8 games most years, not in this division. I think the mean is going to be around 6. I don't think that will keep State fans happy.

And Moorhead recruited good WRs and we have Shrader who is a RPO QB so there are pieces already in place for Leach to work with

"Disaster" is 100% subjective. Depending on whatever expectations you may or may not have, this could also easily be considered a home run hire.

The guy has done nothing but win a bunch of football games everywhere he has been as head coach. His record speaks for itself.

Case in point what im talking about...most Auburn fans consider Gus Malzahn a complete disaster. But...to fans at schools like Mississippi St, Arkansas, and Ole Miss...the numbers he puts up in the win/loss column would be statue building time.

From my point of view this is a home run hire because Leach will probably win anywhere from 6-10 wins/year at Mississippi St. Within 5 years he will most likely have a 10 win season at some point. His numbers prove so.

Numbers of what he's done in the past (he's had 2 10 win seasons in 18 years) don't prove anything for the future. Even if he had ten 10-win seasons, that wouldn't prove he'd do it at a different school and conference. Jim Harbaugh won at San Diego, then at Stanford, then in the NFL, and now he can't win at Michigan at the same level.

Rich Rodriguez won everywhere he coached until he didn't. Same with Bobby Petrino.

Yeah totally. Pass heavy offenses never work in the SEC.

Which pass heavy offenses are you talking about?

Bama? 436 Rushing plays, 406 Passing plays in 2019
LSU? 481 Rushing plays, 518 Passing plays

maybe I am missing the one you are talking about?

Meanwhile...

Wash St- 210 rushing plays (129th in rushing offense)
710 passing plays

Hmmm, seems to be pass heavy on steroids.

I agree with the OP and will add...the hiring of Mike Leach officially ends the run-first defensively focused SEC that has dominated college football the past decade+... welcome to the new SEC...a more athletic version of the BIG12. I weep for you.
