I remember the spot in Taylor opening up right before I moved away. It was well worth the drive out there. Fantastic soul food, creole food, and other types of Southern goodness.

This. Also DC glad you shared my love of Big Star. The Chicken Dressing was just

THIS IS A HIDDEN GEMS THREAD. THE VARSITY IS NOT A HIDDEN GEM. IT IS LITERALLY THE MOST FAMOUS RESTAURANT FROM AN SEC TOWN.

Well excuse the heck out of me! I had never seen one until I went to Athens for a Navy Supply Corps School and haven't seen one since! I thought the place was pretty cool; it reminded me of a McDonald's from way back in the day.

The other Varsity, in Atlanta, is the "world's largest drive in" or some damn thing.

What about Quick Grill?

My favorite local places in Tuscaloosa are:

Nicks in the Sticks
Rama Jama's
City Cafe
Northport Diner
Hooligans
Dreamland

Speaking of Bama Dogs - didn't they have an orange and blue toilet? That was ridiculous.

The new Booth is a major disappointment

Chuck's is great - but be ready to spend a pretty penny

Gallette's - if you like frat-tastic douche bags, girls so drunk they can't stand up, and standing up to your ankles in bar funk (or as I like to call it - "frat funk") - then Gallette's is the place for you.

FWIW, the Varsity is infamous for it's fast-paced, "rude" service. It goes in line with ATL's whole "the city too busy to hate" stigma. It's one of the funniest damn things to see tourists in Atlanta or rival fans in Athens step up to the counter and try to take their time ordering and looking at the menu because the wait staff there doesn't have time for your shite (the Varsity is also one of the busiest restaurant chains you'll ever see). If you don't know what you want, then you'd best step back, decide, rehearse what you're going to say and THEN jump into the fold.

If you're coming to Birmngham for the SEC Baseball Championships, check out Downtown Birmingham. Green Acres and Mrs B's on 4th are some of my favorites. Green Acres has a limited menu, but where else can you get 100 chicken wings and fries for like $10??? Mrs. B's on 4th is the best soul food in the city.

Depends on the day of the week. If your here on Thursday night head downtown all of those bars have great drink specials. They will be crowded though. I would say the Cotton District is the most fun though

Meh....Wintzell`s is OK. I live 2 miles from the one in West Mobile. My question for Bama fans or Tuscaloosa residents is why doesn`t Kozys get more love from locals than it does? Kozys was THE place you took a date to impress her when I was in school in the 90s.. That place was awesome and gets amazing reviews from foodies but it never gets a mention from Bama fans when recommending places to eat. Is it because it`s so expensive or has it gone downhill in recent years?

I think its a combination of people not knowing about it and the price. It is bomb though. best reastaurant in ttown by far. Epiphany Grill is really good too, but it may be close now.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Handy Andy yet. It might be well known in and around Oxford, but seemingly nobody outside of Lafayette County knows what it is. Their burger is great, as is their jumbo barbecue sandwich.

Yeah, best burger in town. Sophomore year when our house was being constructed on, we got to eat at a few places around town for free, and one of them was Handy Andy's. I pretty much lived at that place that semester.

Panini's and Deli News both make awesome sandwiches, but most students hardly frequent either. I'd say that, to the average Oxonian, they're hardly "hidden gems" but, to Ole Miss students, they are.

I see almost nothing BUT students in the Deli News. Granted Freshmen and Sophomores don't really frequent it, but seniors, juniors, and grad students do.

Please tell me yall are joking, that place is awful. The food looks like dog food, I usually go to papitos but I have to be craving Mexican... But Oxford has the worst Mexican and Chinese food I've ever had.

Agreed. I can not eat Chinese food in this town. I can eat Thai and Japanese, but the Chinese is just awful.

I dont feel like looking through all of this. But I bet no one has said the plate lunch at Big Star.

One of my slutbag ex-girlfriends called me Monday bitching that her dad was taking her to lunch because she's broke as hell but she was pissed because he would only take her to Big Star for a plate lunch.

That phone call reminded me of why I can't stand her arse anymore.

"Ah cayn't believe he's taykin me to this naysty ayssed Big Stahr for a Gahd Dayum Fuuuukin Plate Luuunch." (spelling reflects pronunciation.)

True story.

When I eat Mexican I eat Tequilla's next to Kroger. No Mexcian in Oxford is great and Tequilla's is never crowded and I enjoy their taco supreme.

Are you serious? That is by a long shot the worst Mexican place in town. The cheese dip sucks, they make their tomato paste from Campbell's soup, and the quality is pure shite, even by Mexican standards.

I love Maharaja of India on 15th Street and Lai Lai on The Strip. Two of my favorite places.

I would have to go with Egan's or The Filling Station as far as bars go.

As far as asian cuisine, Cafe H2O is fricking awesome. right across university from Sonic (hold all HDN jokes till later please.)

Their egg rolls are unreal and I dont even like egg rolls. It is literally the only place I eat them at. You must try H2O if you havent.

I used to like H2O, but then I actually went to China and I find that place inedible now. They fry the everliving shite out of everything there. Its just not good Chinese food at all.

Wintzell's is good - but since it is not an "original" I don't feel like it is a good "hidden gem" ...of course, that's just IMO

I used to love that place when I was a student at Alabama. Great drunk food. I know the owners hated us.

Rama Jama's

Only went three or four times. But I liked it.

Man, I miss that place. Used to eat there 3-4 times a month.

I've never been.

I like the original in Jerusalem Heights.

....uhmmm.. Churchill's in Baton Rouge ? .. If you like to gag on cigar smoke and smell like an old chimney when you leave, maybe. The scenery - trolling for sugar daddys - is usually good, though ( from what I hear...)

... a "Dream Land BBQ " opened in Baton Rouge a 2 - 3 years back.
..Didn't last 6 months. People in BR know good food. And we have a lot of it...
