Hugo's and any number of places just off Dickson.
Hugo's for sure - and get the Derek's Special with a basket of fries. They also pull a great black & tan.
Herman's is tops for me as well. Can't go wrong with the rib plate or Big 'Uns. Their steaks are incredible too.
Venetian Inn - get the spaghetti and fried chicken. BYOB. Lots of fun.
AQ Chicken - Not that it's all that great these days, but I have incredible memories of going there as a kid when we'd go to Fayetteville for games.
Cafe Rue Orleans - The best New Orleans cuisine north of Baton Rouge, guaranteed, cher.
Tiny Tim's Pizza - Love the salads, and the pizzas are great too.
It's not there anymore, but ROTC used to be incredible. And I don't mean that thing out there by the Drive-in either. That is NOT ROTC. The ONLY ROTC was on Dickson.

As far as asian cuisine, Cafe H2O is fricking awesome. right across university from Sonic (hold all HDN jokes till later please.)
Their egg rolls are unreal and I dont even like egg rolls. It is literally the only place I eat them at. You must try H2O if you havent.
When it coms to Mexican, I eat 3 places in oxford: Mundo Latino, which I descrided earlier, Papitos, and Casa de Mexicana (the artist formerly known as El Charro). At Casa you can get these fricking viking-size beers that are 39 oz draft for 3.75. Also, the food is cheap and solid as well as good strong margaritas.

El Charro used to have a huge man beer Dos equis for like 87 cents. I got semi-drunk as I was leaving Oxford one time.

Places to EAT:
Pawley's Front Porch - burgers are mouthgasmic, handcut fries, fried pickles, great atmosphere, good draft beer selection (was featured in Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives)
Mr. Friendly's - upscale Southern fare, homemade everything, good staff/service
Thirsty Fellow - fairly new joint, great beer selection, all the food is awesome (tvs everywhere, too)
Blue Marlin - best seafood in the Midlands
Carolina Ale House - rooftop bar/patio is nice for Sunday Fundays
There are several other restaurants located in The Vista and 5 Points areas, and most are worth trying.
Where to DRINK:
Flying Saucer - best beer selection in Columbia, great atmosphere, HUGE covered front deck
The Whig - underground bar in Main St, eclectic/different/interesting/hippy/slightly weird atmosphere, a Columbia MUST
Hunter-Gatherer - Columbia's only brewpub
Delaney's - Columbia's only (true) Irish pub
Anywhere in 5 Points / The Vista as well

Yea it was prob El Charro back then. You turn off of Jackson Ave and go down a semi-steep hill into the parking lot.
ps - hope you had a great fricking time....

The night before was a little touch and go. There was a "disturbance" in the square that someone I came with was right in the middle of.

I remember the scene on the square that friday night. It was pretty epic. I was a HS SR and thought I was in heaven. Bitches running wild mane.

Charro is the only Mexican place I truly miss. The food was decent, but the beer was cheap. The drunkest I've ever gotten in my life (I was within an inch of death according to friends) happened on a night which began with me drinking an ENTIRE monster margarita (that's a whole pitcher) on my lonesome.
I then had a few rum drinks, then went blackout. The story goes that I went to some fraternity party, drank a bunch of beer, made out with a random chick (story goes that I grabbed her as she was walking by me and, all Rhett Butler like, swept that trick off of her feet), stole some guy's ciagarettes and, after taking a huge pull off of a bottle of vodka, vomited all over the fricking place.
I should have gone to the hospital, no doubt.

Also in Fedvul, GreenHouse Grill in the Mill District.
Great selection of local, slow food, organic, free range everything, prepared well and typically there's some mountain string band playing music in the evenings. In the same vein, Whole Earth Lounge on Center Street has a great vegan, organic etc lunch buffet. Not a bad price, and healthy as can be.
Also on Center, Damgoode Pies for pizza, with a great "pink sauce". Hjem is a place with great Scandinavian food, and a great place to take a date. The whole Fayetteville Square is usually off the radar for out of towners, so anything there, or on Block (Hugo's) or Center Street, all within a short block or two walk. And its only a couple of blocks off Dickson.
ETA: The pic of the old pointy clock towered building in my sig is looking down Center Street from the town square. Damgoode is on the right, and Whole Earth is on the left.

Na. It was Bama Dogs, which was a little hot dog joint. Now its Horny Dogs which is a New Orleans themed bar/hot dog joint.

Back then, it was almost like the ribs were cooked to order because it took 20-30 minutes to get them to the table. Now they're almost already on the table when you sit down.
Probably because they have 100 slabs cooking while you're at the house deciding where to go eat.
