This is true. Alabama wants to forget that the George Wallace's "Stand in the Schoolhouse Door" took place at Foster Auditorium at the University of Alabama.
The SEC had 3 universities that were more progressive than others on race -- Tennessee, Kentucky, and Vanderbilt. It should surprise no one that all 3 are Upper South schools.
