It's my own personal opinion, so obviously people won't agree, but I said before I just don't understand how Smith provides THAT much more of a benefit to the program than promoting someone from within, given the collateral damage and the PR hit. I don't think Smith would have left a job that has more long term stability unless he was promised something else.

IMO - they should suspend the hog calling at this presser. Save it for their "big" hire in Dec.

But, they'll probably call em anyway.

So if he does well with Petrino's players, does he think he'll get to stay at Arkansas?

I think if he goes 11-1, he gets a 3 year deal.

I could not care less that someone from Arkansas doesn't agree with me about my opinion. I'm not that dumb in my mind, because there are plenty of people that I respect who share at least some of my observations. It's nothing beyond mild amusement and curiosity, as team's coach just won his second national championship in 3 years and your crown jewel couldn't beat him.

So it's all good!

Again, they hired someone that displayed "lack of respect for others" and when, just like Bobby, this also ends poorly...they will seemingly be aghast with surprise.

If the program was coming off a losing season, with no glimmer of hope for next season, then I would agree with hiring within. When you look at our candidates, none stick out as prime candidates as a coach for a preseason top 10 team.

They weren't going to hire Paul Petrino because of his last name. Johnson and Hayes just got here right before the Cotton Bowl and neither has HC experience. Then after that, the assistants become even less qualified. It was the type of season coming up that Arkansas saw a HC with past experience might come in handy.

JLS can bring stability, because the players and coaches like him and know him. He has been a HC before so he knows how to deal with assistants. Thats why he was hired.

I think he could go 10-2 and it would be seriously considered...

Could you put this in a chart for me, I just can't quite seem to grasp what you are saying.

The reason I linked to the article is that Arky is taking a hit from a PR perspective. Arky poster that I quoted posted the media did not care, well the pic on the Front page of ESPN NCAAF with the headlines "Hogs warts" and captions "Hog & Pony show" "Credibility issue". I think ESPN gives a frick now.

Jeff Long and the Arky administration look like they are willing to do anything. They have displayed a pattern of going after other teams coaches midseason and right after they are hired. It just looks bad for the University overall.

I assume that my calling him a dumbass or thinking he's one has as little bearing on him as it does when he calls me one. I only know my intelligence as it relates to my real life experiences, and thus far, I've been way ahead of the game, and received plenty of positive external feedback.

As it is, I think it's silly to call someone a dumbass over such a benign observation, but again, that's in my mind. I'm sure that all of you that are the kings of your own castles in Arkansas will find a way to find me stupid. And I'm perfectly fine with that.

leave the coordinators the job of being coordinators, not taking on HC duties. There's a reason why literally no HC in the SEC is both the HC and the coordinator, even when the HC has their hands all over the spot (e.g. Petrino and Saban, probably Mullen).

I think you are overstating this by far. During my commute yesterday, I heard over an hour of sports radio and not once did they mention anything negative about Arkansas or Smith for leaving Weber State.

i honestly think he cares about these players, whom he coached for 3 years, and knows they have a great team that can do something special. he's also around retiring age.

I understand the argument. I don't necessarily think it makes THAT much difference.

I'm not in Arkansas, so my perspective is broad. Everyone I've heard thinks he looks sort of shitty.

Again, I understand the argument, but that means he's valuing his old players over his current team. I just don't think that's right from a coaching standpoint. Maybe financially it's right, but as a coach, it's very different.

Yea, right now. I said when the seasons starts. Has it started yet? Nope. Was JLS just hired? Yep.

And Gene Wojeajnfjafunaef has hated Arkansas for awhile now. Ever since they hired Petrino, Gene had a huge stick up his arse. Proof.

i'm not in arkansas, either. hell, maybe as an Arkansas fan i'm so used to negative pres that this feels really mild in comparison.

yes, of course he is. he's valuing the players he recruited and coached for 3 years over the players he's known for 3 months. The tweets from Arkansas players confirm just how close he was with this team.

3 year relationship with players he helped recruit vs a 4 month relationship with players that he didn't even help recruit, much less pick out.

I wonder why he would value that.
