Because he's going to be leading the program for years right?

All a school can do is offer. And a big time school isn't 'looking out' for a FCS schools welfare. Its a business. It was a smart hire. As soon as the seasons start, the media will give 2 shits about JLS and how he left Weber State.

And again, it isn't up to Arkansas to look out for Weber State. They are protecting their multi-million dollar program. Thats it.

who exactly does he have to explain his motivations to and why? it was his decision to take the job and leave those poor, sad, manipulated, abused weber state players - does he owe you an explanation?

Everything after but is bullshite. Arkansas' justification or motivation is not in question. I doubt the claim Smith was hired with the understanding he would coach only one year.

Where did I say 1 year?

And truthfully, had you heard of Weber State before hand? Do you know what city its in? State? Do you not think JLS could've gotten a coordinator position or a sun-belt job? Cause I think he could've. You don't go to Weber State to become a Bear Bryant or a legend there. You go to that area to retire.

it's not like he'll get credit if the team does well anyway. That will go to Petrino

Yeah right, in these media cycle times ESPN will forget who Petrino was by the time bowls roll around, and if we're in a good one, guarantee the story is "Look at the great job John L. Smith has done at Arkansas with such a short window of opportunity, the players have really rallied around him, he's a great motivator, he coached them through the adversity, blah blah blah". I'm not saying its right, but they will give him the credit (or blame) because they don't understand he is just an administrator keeping the seat warm

I understand that. I'm just a big picture person, so it's hard for me to compartmentalize the overall scenario. Clearly Arkansas was in a bind. And clearly the program will do what they think is best. Arkansas pays more money, and it's his life in the end. But the people who were set to play for him were clearly shocked and upset. Regardless of the reasons, the circumstances draw parallels, and people aren't being hypercritical when they point them out.

You're really breaking out a Wojceichowskie article? Oh no, he says JLS has no integrity, what will Arkansas do?

If you asked him, would he take a writers job for 8 times the amount he was making at a job he just took, what do you think his answer would be?

If Arkansas had hired an NFL OC or DC, people would say what about those poor NFL players that he just left. Lose-lose situation I guess.

More than likely, they'll look at his record everywhere else, Petrino's record, see that the coaching staff and players are exactly the same, see that Arkansas hired him for the least possible disruption, and he'll get a status quo. Miles won with Sabans players 2 years later and people still won't give him full credit.

It's not quite the same because of the professional component. They would still think him an arse, but these are college kids. There's a pretty big difference in the mentality.

They are pretty successful in the FCS realm. If you are saying that Smith is going to Arkansas to be a legend, with a one year contract worth $900,000, that's a little misguided.

Head coaches that have chosen better jobs in the SEC are a dime a dozen.

Bama (for Saban)>Dolphins
tOSU>UF
AU>OM>ISU

This conference, and coaching in general is made up of selfish shysters. Big deal. Yea, yea, I know these don't count b/c they're not going to POS Arkiesaw.

Then who the hell was Arkansas supposed to hire?

Coaches that would be willing to leave their programs then were slim to none. Arkansas obviously didn't want any of the coaches who were sitting around. And they clearly didn't want to promote within. JLS came to Arkansas, not Long to him.

And as for JLS' ego or mentality, he took a 10 month job for almost a million dollars. He will be getting paid $85k a month and he doesn't even have to coach or recruit. He just has to keep everything in order. Pretty good gig if you ask me.

So if he does well with Petrino's players, does he think he'll get to stay at Arkansas?

I wonder how many games he'd have to win to get an extended contract, since everyone's going to give him all of the credit.

I vote for that.

A chance to win a BCS title while getting paid $850,000, or coach a team in the middle of Utah for $130,000 where you are the 4th most popular team in Utah? Hmmmm, thats a tough one.
