Has Aggie baseball underachieved more than Aggie football?

Serious question. We know there is a ton that goes into a championship football program, and much of it is off the field business.

Baseball is a sport that historically has NOT been dominated by schools with the best facilities and most money.

A&M competes in a talent-rich state, and has always been in a conference with nationally competitive programs, thus pushing them to be at a high level. Johnson and Childress had some outstanding teams, but I feel like many failed to meet postseason expectations. Hell, the guy before them had a solid winning percentage.

They’ve made the CWS in 51, 64, 93, 99, 11, and 17. Their record in those combined trips is 2-12. Two total wins in Omaha is abysmal for a school that has been as talented as they have.

In ‘93, they entered as a 1-seed, but could only notch a win over Kansas.

I think it’s fair to call 1989 a choke. I recall 2 supers in a row against TCU where the Ags were either a National Seed or had the Frogs on the ropes, and lost both.

Historically, Texas, TCU, and Rice have clearly been better. Texas Tech has passed them up. Even Baylor and Houston have had some magical runs that produced close title trips.

What gives?

At least their football team “won a title” back in 1939.

Their baseball team hasn’t even played for a CWS title

It is by far their most successful sport of the "big 3", which ironically is also the sport they've been dominated by certain other teams the most

They simply cannot get it done in the postseason, though. And they talk about their 1989 team like it's the 72 dolphins, yet they didn't even qualify for Omaha.

I realize this is a troll thread because it’s on this board but yes, I think so. Football is tougher road, we really should be a national power in baseball. Hopefully Schloss can get us there

No, that’s just the sensitivity of your fanbase. It’s a legitimate question. For a school in a hotbed of D1 and MLB talent, the Aggies haven’t ever had the elite arm or potent lineup to make a deep Omaha run. How is the Johnson or Childress era viewed? It seems like they did everything but win in Omaha. I’m not even saying they should have a natty, but definitely have had talented enough teams to get more than a single win at a time.

No, it’s that this board is a disaster and there are rarely serious topics

We had the talent in 2011 for sure to win a title with Wacha, Stripling, Naquin and a bunch of other good college players. Childress teams continually disappointed in the postseason. We haven’t consistently stacked talent like we should be able to either, it’s much more cyclical. Childress was great at getting commits from pitchers who had no shot of coming to campus (Kershaw, Shelby Miller come to mind, there’s others I’m not thinking of). Schlossnagle was better at getting guys to forgo pro ball so we will see

Is that the one where Ben McDonald pitched 2 games and whipped their arse?

And those guys aren’t really losses because everyone understood they weren’t ever going to come to school. There was little in between with Childress though it seemed, with a large drop from those caliber of recruits to the guys we ended up with. This was especially true in the later years.

When we would get some recruits who were probably on the fence between pro ball and school, it seemed extremely rare we would end up with them. Nick Williams is an example I’ll use off the top of my head who was kind of in that area, I think a 3rd or 4th rounder and signed for probably a few hundred thousand. That’s the type of kid it seemed like we never got. As a result it was more talent development (which Childress was good at pitching wise) and thus there were valleys that we shouldn’t have IMO. That was my beef recruiting wise with the previous coaching regime

There’s a whole litany of micro scale failures in the various exits we had, some with really good teams (2011 and 2016 especially)

Need to add Dallas Baptist to this list now.

Didn’t realize the curse of 1939 extended to all sports. Don’t lose heart, it is only for 100 years and should dissipate in 2039.

We're playing Tennessee, not Tulane.

And you accuse us of being obsessed

I'm happy for you though. Getting to go to the Erwin Center is the closest you'll ever come to being a Texas graduate

I graduated. I graduated from the one college I applied for. I didn't get rejected like you on university #1 then used Daddy to get you in at t.u (#2)

That's a lot of words to say you knew you weren't smart enough to get in

Run along now. It's been well established that you're so obsessed and jealous with Texas that you'd rather go to their games than A&M's (not that I blame you. That fatso y'all hired as a coach is an abject disaster)

He deserves every bit of it. Don’t worry he calls everyone obsessed.
