Still a bit more than Mevis

BY WENDELL SHEPHERD JR.
Columbia Tribune

With only three seconds remaining against then-No. 15 Kansas State on Saturday, Missouri kicker Harrison Mevis lined up for a 61-yard field goal. When the kick split the uprights, Mevis secured the program’s biggest home victory in a decade and wrote his name in the history books.

The 61-yard boot set the Southeastern Conference record for longest converted field goal.

However, it was not Missouri’s record.

That record belongs to Tom Whelihan — the barefooted kicker turned Columbia elementary school gym teacher who set the record with his 62-yard kick against Colorado on Oct. 11, 1986.

HOWEVER! All previous 60+ yard kicks were made using a kicking tee. The use of the kicking tee on field goals and extra points was outlawed in 1989.

Back in 1977 Russell Erxleben and Steve Little both kicked 67 yard field goals and Tony Franklin kicked a 65 yarder around that time. I thought it was pretty cool that the SWC had 3 kickers doing this around the same time.

But they used a tee back then so that takes a little shine off of it.

I’m not surprised Mevis made that kick, he’s been the best weapon you’ve had recently and has won key games for his team. He’ll be missed.
