Gus Malzahn was a pathetic head coach

I’m tired of seeing “holy shite how could you fire a guy that was 3-5 against Saban??”
Two of those wins were against bama teams riddled with injuries. That’s how.
Why does no one mention that he was 0-13 against Alabama, Georgia, and LSU outside of Jordan Hare? Why does no one mention his biggest bowl win was the birmingham bowl? Why does no one mention he never sniffed the playoffs?
The guy was arse and got kicked to the curb as he should’ve been 4 years ago.

Well I’m glad that’s been settled.

I disagree. I think he was a pretty good head coach that couldn't get out of his own way with the offense. If he could've brought himself to give up the offense, I think he could've been better.
But he was hired for his offense...

2017 - weren’t like half of bama’s impact players on defense out?
2019 - Tua was out

Weird.
When we all called Gus high school and laughed at his Mickey Mouse offense Aubies defended him to the death.
I think you may find out he was pretty good for Aubie.

Lol expectations are a little lofty. As long as Alabama is Alabama, Auburn will never sniff the playoff.

I think that’s bullshite. No one goes 0-13 against their rivals away from home and can’t win a good bowl game and be considered a good coach.

Harsin already has experience taking over a Malzahn team. Lol

Not really...he just wasn't the coach for Auburn that we want. There is a good chance the next one won't be either, but we learned that they all can accomplish generally what Gus accomplished.

I think he fell into the trap quite a few offensive genius types fall into. You come up with this amazing system and it is unstoppable.
Until folks figure out how to stop it. You can do one of two things at this point to salvage the situation. You can concentrate on what still works and double down on that. Or you can change things completely. Both are effective choices.
Gus, like quite a few folks, refused to make any sort of changes. A while back the late Frank Broyles made the observation that the Malzahn offense only works with a running QB. When Gus had running QBs the offense worked. Rather than doubling down on making sure he had the fastest and best spread option QB he could find Gus insisted that any QB could run his system. That is what did him in.
You must adapt or die in college football and frankly you need to adapt a lot faster today then you used to.

This and a rule change he was exploiting.

Yep. That was his downfall. Somebody put an article out last week that confirmed that. He refused to do anything in the offseason to try and evolve or learn anything new.

You think any head coach can reach a playoff and win the SEC then compete for another chance at making the playoffs? The only reason you are saying that is due to Chizik but that had nothing to do with him and everything to do with Malzahn and Cam.

This doesn’t make any sense. ‘Gus would have been a better coach if he wasn’t stupid and didn’t suck.’

And Terry Bowden, and Tommy Tuberville.
