The only true grand-slam hires are where the expectations for the coach are to do exactly what they’ve already done at a previous job under closely similar circumstances. The hires I think of in this category are:
1. Saban at Alabama
2. Urban at Ohio State
3. Jimbo at A&M
It looks like number 3 is showing that even grand slams don’t always work.
Edit: Johnny Majors at Tennessee would be another grand slam that didn’t work.

I actually know little about him; but I’ve zero doubt Woodward vetted him thoroughly and negotiated a great deal on behalf of LSU.
