Field goals are still far from automatic, but am I wrong to think they’ve become much more routine in recent years, both in college football and the NFL?

Longer kicks seem far more common now, likely because long snappers and holders are more specialized, programs recruit kickers from around the world, and technique and training have improved.

Not that long ago a 55-plus-yard field goal felt like a rare, almost desperation-level attempt. Now it seems like something teams genuinely expect their kickers to make.
