TX message boards are saying they've heard Herman has accepted the position "in principle" until it can be finalized.

Y'all really should read the coaching search thread on our board.

I have read it and been around this coaching thing for many years not to fall for this stuff at face value.

If South Carolina has their guy, according to that poster about the AD calling recruits, that means they likely have Smart in place already.

If it weren't for what's included in the very last few posts in that thread I'd hesitate a lot more.

Umm...SoCaroline/Mizzou to Texas/USCw is a step up.

First of all ... bitch, when you type South Carolina type South Carolina. frick you. (ETA: If your slight was intentional, if not, mea culpa)

Secondly, South Carolina and Mizzou are not the same regardless of how much you troll it ... it does not make it so. I'm not even going to waste my valuable time trying to explain it to you.

Thirdly, yes Texas and SoCal are more high profile jobs that will pay more. Both have a lot of upside, South Carolina is not comparable to either of those at the moment ... unless we're talking baseball.

But South Carolina has plenty of upside on the football side of things - a ton of selling points. We do not have low expectations, but we are patient to a degree. Our facilities are easily some of the finest in the country. Very few programs can honestly boast better facilities, in any sport. We're a couple of hours from great beaches, great mountains, great golf courses, great recruiting in all directions. A coach is treated like royalty here ... private yachts to board, Augusta National to play along with a half dozen other Top 100 courses, private planes to fly all over the world, unbelievable fishing, etc., etc., etc. Charlotte is an hour up the road. Charleston an hour and a half in the other direction. Hilton Head, Myrtle Beach, Fripp Island, Pawley's Island, Sullivan's Island all with boosters who will happily toss the door keys to beach houses to our coach and his family 24/7/365.

Rabid, hungry, fans.

We play in the SEC.

South Carolina will do just fine come signing time. We're not going to get anyone that SoCal or Texas really wants to come after ... but Texas is not going to fire Charlie Strong this year IMHO and SoCal, well, who knows who they'll really go after.

Red McCombs would pay all of the buyouts by himself to get Tom Herman if that was an option.

Another thing that would give me pause is that Herman and Rhoades had a face to face meeting last night (also met with Fuente).

If he already had an agreement in place with South Carolina he wouldn't be wasting MR's time.

You can keep typing out these posts, but the bottom line is if Texas wants your coach. They'll come get your coach.

Yes, Texas has a lot of clout.

But they are way down in terms of prestige, facilities wise, and money wise from where they were 10 years ago.

They are well on their way to being Georgia Tech athletically.

There is no such a thing. You don't understand how much money they have, how many billionaires their program is backed by.

I absolutely do understand that. I've got family who are both A&M and UT Austin alumni. The money is notsomuch the point as it is the law of diminishing returns.

If SCAR makes the buyout rock solid and Herman has been here a year or two ... let's say he is doing well and does not sign the extension at the end of a season for whatever reason ... if he leaves and there is a $15 million buyout on his remaining contract of two or three years, then it would not be smart business to pay the buyout and then pay him $6 million a year which is what he would demand at that point.

You're talking a $45 million commitment for a coach with a couple of years of head coaching experience when you could hire a NFL coach for less or the same money. And that's not including the $10 million it would take to buy-out Strong ... so you're really looking at a $55 million commitment and no school is that stupid.

If it were Saban, yeah ... I could see it, or Urban Meyer even. But Herman still has to make his bones somewhere in a tough league against tough competition and one or two years at SCAR is not going to establish him as being on the level with a Saban or Urbie.

Texas could get John Gruden for $6 million a year without having to buyout his contract for example.

Those Texas boosters you speak of ... my Uncle Steve is one of them and he didn't make all his money by being stupid with his money.

I'm coming out to Texas in a few weeks, the week of the 10th thru the 16th, to Midland for a hunt ... Big Axis, deer and pigs. There are always a ton of big Texas donors at these hunts when we fly in ... I'm looking forward to talking to some of my old buddies about how Strong is doing at Texas. Anyways, it's my favorite hunt of the year every year - great group of guys.

Appears to be something going on, no doubt about it ... I may try to watch that Strong presser myself. If true then WTF?

Had a press conference today. Talked about Herman and Fuente but only because he was asked about them specifically.

Just general outline stuff. Nothing noteworthy.
