My buddy and I are discussing traveling up to Columbia for our game. It would be a day trip. I live 3.5 hours away and he lives a little further. We don't know anyone else who is planning on going. We're mid 20s. We would score cheap tickets but not looking to pay $$$ if that's even possible (lol, I know it's not). Mainly looking to soak in the sights and sounds. Is it worth it if you're a little cash strapped. Any chance of non-Carolina fans getting an invite into a cockabose or anything like that? Free parking anywhere (willing to walk a couple of miles)? I want to make the trip, but I also am having a hard time justifying it due to unknown factors.

1) There are so many away fans for SC-UGA games you'll be able to find some friendlies in no time, but even as a UGA fan, who generally gets more hostility than about anyone else would in Columbia, there are always some hospitable Gamecocks.
2) You can try to go up Rosewood and park somewhere in the neighborhoods around there, or the old Sarge Frye baseball stadium parking lot.. but being a UGA-SC game it'll get packed quick.

First of all, our tailgating is different than most places. I'll probably get berated over this but I like ours maybe more than other places. The two main areas are large parking lots. Personally, I think it's better than the small lot areas in most college towns. It's more like one big party with lots of folks passing through vs seeing the same thing all day. If you don't really have anybody to party with, make your way to the Loose Cockaboose bar. This is not an actual Cockaboose. Those are owned by rich folks. That does not mean they wouldn't welcome you in but in now way does it represent how the vast majority of Gamecocks tailgate.

Good advice so far from the both of you. Thanks. I hopefully have an interview not too far away from Columbia that week so I figure it'd be a fun place to celebrate if I did well! As for dealing with rich folks, I was a poor kid in a private school (my mother worked there and I got to go pennies to the dollar). I know how to schmooze with the wealthy and rub elbows with the common man.

You could park on South Pickens for free and walk about two miles to the stadium. Lived on that street my senior year and saw tons of people do it. There is a ton of $5-10 parking closer to the stadium too. The spots around Olympia aren't bad but traffic will be a bitch.

You'd be paying out the arse for tickets if you're trying to scalp some though, and might end up with fakes.

Yeah, I don't expect it. But hey, I might try. I've gotten big tickets for cheap and for free before. I ended up with 8 tickets to a major OOC game a few years ago. It's all about networking with decent folk and that can work. If it's just a day of me sitting around in a new destination drinking a six pack, you can't do too bad. Not for sure going, but there is nothing to do in the town where I live.

As long as you aren't disruptive you are welcome at our cock-a-boose tailgate. But most everybody is friendly around the cock a booses. There are a bunch of people who just bring their own beer and hang out.

I do not recommend the old baseball park. Not the tailgate experience that you seem to be looking for.

Been there twice...

1) Tickets are not cheap and they are very scarce.
2) you are in a fair ground tailgating, so the heat is a bitc$.
3) only good place to tailgate is the cockaboose, everything is too hot and remote and no shade anywhere.

Conclusion, if you don't have tickets and dont know someone who can get you on the cocaboose, don't go.

This game is over a month away, there is no way to know what the weather will be like. It's actually been really mild by our standards but of course it could be 95 degrees. For it to be so hot it's amazing that hundreds of thousands of people find a way to manage and not die. I know everybody in Athens does not have their own personal oak tree at their tailgate. Best place to park will be just to get there early and drive in on Bluff road and get as close to the stadium as you can and it will end up costing you about $20.

I personally guarantee it will be hot as balls, you obviously have never been to that game.

Secondarily, the last time I was in there, I watched a man die of a heart attack and the stadium ran out of water.

So, yea...fun times in Columnia in early September.

You control the weather or something? 3:30 in September is looking like it will be hot, but you never know what the weather is going to do.

If you poors run out of water during our game, you're going to have to deal with 10,000 pissed off Texans.

We have never run out of water. Stupid UGA poster is just salty about his last trip to Columbia ending with a loss
