A decision on the coaching future of Frank Martin with the USC men’s basketball program will be rendered early next week sources told SportsSC.com on Saturday. Martin will meet with Gamecock athletics director Ray Tanner perhaps as early as Monday. According to sources, Martin will be presented with multiple options from the University, none of which includes remaining as the head coach.

Martin has two years remaining on his contract and his buyout would cost USC over six million dollars unless it is negotiated down.

Martin just completed his ninth season as head coach of the Gamecocks, and it was the poorest of his time in Columbia. The Gamecocks were defeated in the SEC Tournament Thursday night to end their season with a 6-15 mark, 4-13 in SEC competition. The six wins are the fewest since the 1998-99 team went 8-21.

Martin is 153-134 overall at USC (53%) and 74-91 (45%) in conference games. He led the Gamecocks to a school recorded 26 wins and to the Final Four in 2016-17 in his one NCAA Tournament appearance with the program. The Gamecocks made the NIT the previous season. The Gamecocks had a streak of six consecutive non-losing seasons end this year, one of the most successful runs in the program’s history.

The search for a new coach will commence immediately, and sources say one prominent name early on will be former Gamecock guard Mike Boynton, who is the head coach at 12th ranked Oklahoma State.

Do they do anything other than fire coaches at South Carolina? It's a coaching graveyard.

Just didn't recruit well enough, he deserves credit for the Final Four, but he also deserves the credit for not capitalizing off of it.

Boynton's success this season at OK State has sped up the process as well.

1 season better than anything half the schools in the SEC have ever done and a bunch of nothing.

FIFY

Dude needs to hang it up. He looked like a cancer patient this year. Time for him to go enjoy life.

I don't think any Final Four is a fluke, that team had multiple 4*'s Thornwell, Silva, and I think Dozier was a 5*. All three are in the NBA. Either way they earned every bit of that Final Four, the problem was we never could rebuild what we lost after that.

I mean then it's not a fluke. He recruited all of those guys.

As mentioned above, Martin never capitalized on their talent before that run and didn't capitalize after it.

Also, we fired both the football and basketball coaches in the same year. How many times has that happened in conference history?

Why would he negotiate down?

Probably the best thing for him. I couldn’t believe how horrible he looked the other night. Looks like death walking. Needs to take a break and focus on getting healthy.

Slow our roll? Martin has been here for 9 years and we've gotten demonstrably worse since that tournament run.

No. He did have COVID though. Started losing his hair because of it, and decided to just shave his head completely.
